One thing that Klaus, Tanya and FP didn't specifically mention, that might be relevant. You talk about flying into “Nelspruit”. The actual airport at Nelspruit closed to passenger traffic a couple of years ago. A brand new airport opened for all passenger traffic, Kruger Mpumulanga International (code, as Klaus mentioned, is MQP). Although this is no longer very close to Nelspruit some travel agents (and even airlines) still refer to MQP as Nelspruit. It is actually near the town of White River which is much closer to Kruger National Park. This is definitely the best place to pick up your hire car on arrival. Why take a taxi for over half an hour to get to Nelspruit?
If you book your car through an Internet Broker such as www.carhire4less.co.uk or www.carhire3000.com you will find a car at a much cheaper rate than booking direct in South Africa – either with an International company or a local small company. Put in either MQP, Kruger International Airport or Nelspruit Airport as the pick up – they are all the same! The car will come from one of the “Majors”. Last two times I have booked a car at MQP through Carhire4less it has come from Hertz and has cost more than 40 percent less than booking the identical car direct!
From the airport Nelspruit is over 30 mins drive. Hazyview is about 45mins. So very little difference. Excellent shopping in Hazyview. We normally stock up there for all our trips to Kruger.
As Klaus, FP and Tanya point out it is also a much better place to spend a few days as a base than Nelspruit. I definitely know where I would prefer to spend my first few days holiday in South Africa! However if you prefer to stay in Nelspruit, that is definitely your choice.
