3 day self drive itinerary

Hi,

We are two guys going to Kruger from 7.-9. October - so 3 days and 2 nights. We have been talking about doing selfdrive in the park, but we are in doubt of how we should organise such a trip. Our budget is 100-150$ per night per person.

Can you recommend an itinerary for us?

1. Where are the animals at that time of year?

2. Where should we enter the park?

3. Which route can you recommend?

4. Which campsites could fit in this itinerary (www.sanparks.org)?

We look forward to hearing your recommendations.

What excitement. !!

If you are flying into Johannesburg and driving to Kruger, you could enter through Malelane or Numbi gates which are the closest.

Based on your preference, you could stay at a larger camp that has on site restaurants or at smaller camps that have no restaurants but have kitchens (shared or private) so you can self cook/barbecue

I am including the link to my Trip report of the 7 day trip I had in June

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g312618-i9872-k757…

I will let others speak to October weather, but animals are there through out the year and plentiful. So keep driving as much as you can to see more of them.

About your budget, assuming you can do shared accommodation, that is a sufficient budget to work with for sanparks camps and should cover accommodation and food and gas expenses. Also note the $25/day/person conservation fee that sanparks charge

You need to see what accommodation is available for your 2 nights - check the Sanparks website. You will need to book ASAP. Skukuza would be my preference for only 2 nights. Nice drives to Lower Sabie and Pretoriouskop (for lunch) and this southern area is always full of wildlife. If your budget will stretch to it you can fly to Skukuza and pick up a hire car there to save the 6 hour drive from Johannesburg. If you do drive, I suggest you enter via the Numbi gate for Skukuza, or Malalene gate for Crocodile Bridge camp, Burgendal or Lower Sabie.

Are you planning on driving from Johannesburg? With only two days try and fly to either Hoedspruit or Skukuza. I'd stay both nights at the same camp, consider Skukuza or Lower Sabie if you are driving from Joburg, otherwise Satara. The game densities are usually greatest in Central and Southern Kruger. Skukuza area more known for leopards and Satara for lion and cheetah, but in the end nothing is guaranteed. All these camps you can stay in a bungalow for approx R1000per night which sleeps two. There are restaurants at all the camps mentioned if you don't want to self cater and you can also book sunset or night drives or even bush walks at the camp, if memory serves right these are about R350 per person. If you wan't an all inclusive experience have alook at Africa onfoot and Shindzela, both in the Greater Kruger and they might fit your budget. My recommendation, try and extend your stay to three nights then you can devide your time between two different camps..

Thank you so much for your help! It is very useful. It sounds like we should make up our minds quite soon.

We are planning to drive from Johannesburg, but the day before. So if you count the day from Johannesburg as well we will have 4 days and 3 nights. The plan was to drive to some town at the entrance of the park and sleep there and then go in the park early in the morning on the first day. But I guess we can drive directly in the park the day of the arrival. So an itinerary could look a bit like this:

Day 1. Drive from Johannesburg to Kruger through Numbi/Malalene to Skukuza.

Day 2. Drive in the park sleep at Skukuza

Day 3. Drive in the park sleep at Skukuza

Day 4. Leave the park

There is very little accommodation at this time as it is school holidays. If you book quickly you may find a hut at a camp like Pretoriouskop with communal ablutions but the Park is very full. You may well need to look at something on the borders of the Park like the Numbi Hotel in Hazyview or around there and possibly even in and around Komatipoort but its going to be very difficult to find 3 consecutive days in the Park on your given dates.

Oh, so we are travelling right in the middle of school holidays?

Anyways, I managed to book two nights at Skukuza in one of the last available bungalows and then we are probably going to spend the first night right outside the park. Again thank you all very much for your help.

Hello there

Your plan is looking good, and the two of you will have a great adventure self driving in Kruger, plus it will easily fit your budget.

You can drive from Jhb right through to Skukuza on the one day and that is what I would suggest. We have done that trip many times, when staying at various southern camps including Skukuza, and entering at Malelane Gate.

The most important thing I think is ensuring you leave as early as absolutely possible. You need to allow plenty of time for the trip, as you will have stops along the way. Probably a coffee stop half way to the park to stretch your legs, have a bathroom break and a meal. Then once in the park the speed limit drops to 50klmh. However your average speed will be half of that as you need to drive slow to spot wildlife and may spend time at sightings. So a long trip but a good one, we usually leave before the sun comes up and have been in Malelane when the shops open.

The other important things is to book your accommodation, have you checked the Sanparks site yet?

Oops it looks like we cross posted!

That is great that you got a bungalow in Skukuza. Still try to get as close to the park as possible the first night, with only a short visit you will want to maximize you game viewing days. Not sure if you looked at any other camps but Berg en Dal or Crocodile Bridge would also be ok for your first night. It means you will be right in the park for your first mornings drive.

If you are staying at Skukuza and need to access camp late then you have until 9 p.m. to come in under escort. One pays a little extra for the service but at least you wake up in the morning and are there! Most of the camps that are within reach of a gate offer this facility! Please wave to us if you see our silver bus with footprints all over it and flying a yellow ribbon!
