Are published Kruger private safari / lodge rates real??!!

I'm confused on rates. The top private lodges post prices on their sites starting at 13,000 rand per day PER PERSON. That's US$1500 each! I have a hard time believing everyone is paying that much. There are only so many couples who can afford $3000 a day. Not enough to keep them in business (I assume).

Willing to pay but I don't want to get there and find out from other guests I missed out on a deal. Any suggestions on where to find better rates or custom packages? I've tried searching but got overwhelmed.

Thank you.

There are many excellent luxury lodges whose rates are substantially lower. However if you are looking at the very exclusive 5* lodges then yes the rates are real. I would encourage you to talk to a good agent (there are a few regulars on this forum) about what your rfequirements and expectations are so that you can find the right lodge for you. The right lodge might be R13000 pppn or it might be half that (or less). :)

Yes there are private lodges that charge those amounts, you are not reading wrong, and I doubt you will do much cheaper booking elsewhere though I stand to be corrected on that.

However there are many many incredible lodges that charge much less.

It seems you are looking at the lodges in the most ''elite'' catergory, presumably in the Sabi Sand, where we have stayed several times ourselves but have never paid anything even close to that. We sill get luxury and an amazing experience but do not choose to include massages, top shelf liquors, spa treatments, designer linen and so on.

Check out all the lodge reviews on this site and you will get an idea why they are so expensive. All inclusive rates, service of top quality rangers and trackers for anything from 7 -8 hours upwards per day, usually great food at the lodge and also out on the drives, amazing rooms and suites, and of course very limited vehicles at a sighting. From our experience the rates are no less via an agent, but thats not to say its not possible, you may do better.

We too cannot begin to imagine paying $3000 per night but I can assure you plenty of people do, But I repeat you are looking at the very top lodges for that sort of money, no need unless you want all those aforementioned type of extras.

Hi there,

Yes, this is true - BUT that is only for the top, top TOP lodges in the area. Is that what you are looking for?

Take a look at Dulini, Exeter, Kirkmans Kamp, and Leadwood Lodge.

Otherwise, if you are not necessarily only after luxury, have a look at Gomo Gomo, nThambo Tree Camp, Arathusa Lodge, Elephant Plains and Africa on Foot :).

All the best,

Hmmmm... no interest in massage or spa. Don't drink whiskey. I can sleep perfectly well without Frette bedding! Interested in beautiful architecture, good food, professional rangers. Will check out lodges mentioned.

Thank you so much for taking the time to give advice.

Yep... you gotta pay for those rose pedals laid around your bathtub, the gold leafed chocolates resting on your pillow and the elephant escorted ride to the resort entrance. ;-)

Or just save and go with some of the better value for money options listed by LodgeTrackers above. Safari experiences are fantastic in this part of the world and you can save a fortune if you go with non-Luxury resorts and even more if you just self-drive. We have had excellent experiences at Gomo Gomo, mentioned above just to show that you can have safari experiences of a lifetime and don't have to spend that much. See reviews (w/pictures) if useful.

true Bradjill, the escort we get back to the room at night is not on an elephant, just a frail little man armed with a torch to fend off the wildlife !

And we prefer to drink local wines when we stay there anyway.

Also another vote for Jacquis abovementioned lodges, we are soon to return to Dulini for the fourth time.

To many great reasons to mention here [read the reviews] but yes great food and people, great wildlife, gorgeous rooms, and best of all, only six pax per vehicle. Another factor you may want to consider if you are travelling as a couple, its very important to us.
