Hotel for 3 nights before tour.

Hi,

my partner & I are arriving at OR Tambo airport at 5:15 am on 29 November and leaving on a tour with Nomad from the OR Tambo Garden Court at 8am on the 2 December. We are thinking of staying in Sandton, it seems safe & has good access to Gautrain which seems like the best transport choice.

We will want to do several tours or activities while in Jo'burg, such as Soweto tour & the Apartheid museum etc, the Air Ventures hot air ballooning, maybe the cheetah rehabilitation centre.

I just want to confirm that Sandton would be a good location for that type of visit. I'd like to keep the costs down, don't need 5 star. At the moment I'm looking on booking.com & seeing some reasonable deals.

I'm also wondering if getting from a hotel in Sandton out to OR Tambo Garden Court Hotel well before 8am on a Monday morning could be an issue?

Thanks.

There is the Garden Court Sandton City that is walking distance from the Gautrain and also the shopping mall

and restaurants. Make sure that it is the Garden Court Sandton City because there is another Garden Court in Sandton but not so nice. Sandton is very nice and safe.

Soweto and Apartheid museum is the most popular tour. Hot air balloon is also cold. Cheetah is also very good tour.

All the best

The De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre is a captive breeding facility for cheetahs and other animals that is situated in the foothills of the Magaliesberg mountain range in the North West Province of South Africa. This is just more than a hour drive from Johannesburg. You have to booked the tour and they also have a cheetah run on certain mornings. The guided tour is about 3 hour.

Hi Agnes

As you know about the cheetah rehab place you might be able to tell me something I have been unable to find out.

I know they do captive breeding and have in fact bred over 800 cheetah but no where can I find out if any cheetah have been actually introduced back in to the wild. Or are they just bred for the tourist to see/touch/feed?

The last time that I was at De Wildt the lady that took us on the tour told us that they released cheetahs in Madikwe successfully. Here is another link that you can read about a cheetah that was released into the nature.

Hope this helps.

Hello, yes you can take the train at 08h30 from Sandton to ORTambo. Just leave enough time to walk there (if you are staying in Sandton). I suggest Sandton as a base, it is very safe, huge choice of coffee shops, restaurants and hotels, guests houses. Look at Garden Court Katherine Street, or closer to the Gautrain Station, Garden Court West Street. This is a great place to use as a base, there are Gautrain busses that will take you out to Montecasino as well, if you would like to see other areas. All safe and well priced.

There is lots to see as well. You have a choice of half day (5hours) or full day (9 hours) tours.

Cheetah Research - the cheetah runs starts at 8am, so you have to leave early (safe side plus an hour for travelling) And booking is essential, open only on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Tour finishes around 11am, then you can visit the Walk with Elephants and after that a fantastic visit to the Monkey Sanctuary. Lunch can be at the huge craft market at Chameleon Village (coffee shops, restaurants and a snake park)

OR instead of the Monkey Sanctuary, visit the Cultural Village for African singing, dancing a must see - enjoyed by all my guests. There is also the Cable Car that goes up the Magaliesberg Mountains with lovely restaurant.

As suggested before: Soweto and Apartheid Museum with Johannesburg city overview - full day.

Or: Rhino and Lion Park - Cultural Village and Cradle of Humankind in the afternoon - full day.

Bill Harrop also do ballooning in that area. Pick up is REALLY EARLY, but worth while to do, once in a lifetime experience. You would be finished with that around 9am so you could add any of the other places to make up a full day tour.

So there are lots of things to do. You can tweak any of the suggestions to make up full day tours.

Maybe also have a read of the question on the top right hand corner of this page, the reality of lion cub petting, prior to making your decision.

De Wildt supplied some of the cheetahs that were released into Mountain Zebra National Park a few years back. Not sure what % of the cheetahs they breed get returned to the wild though.

I second the caution above. Whatever you do and wherever you go, don't pet cubs.
