Hotel not too far from OR Tambo

Looking for a hotel to stay for one night between arrival from Australia and flight to Victoria Falls next day in September. We arrive late afternoon after a very long flight and will be trying to stay awake for a few hours to adjust for jet lag. So we are looking for a hotel where there is somewhere to walk around nearby- shopping mall or park etc, and is within a short shuttle/taxi to the airport.

Cewpitt

Sounds like us last September. We arrived late afternoon on Qantas direct flight from Sydney. We booked the Emperors Palace, Peermont Metcourt, the most basic of the 4 hotels. Guests have access to the casino and restaurants, entertainment of the resort which you can access from any of the 4 hotels attached to this complex. By the time we got the shuttle which runs every 20 minutes from ORT, checked in, got into our room and organised ourselves to be ready for our flight to Vic Falls next morning , then had 1 drink in the bar, could hardly keep our eyes open. Never made it out the front door to visit the Casino Resort. In a few words in creeps up on you. Here it is close to the airport and you can entertain yourselves for a few hours.

There are 4 hotels in that casino complex. You can see them here: peermont.com/peermont/…CasinoEmperors The Metcourt is the newest and the Metcourt Suites can often be pretty close in price, with larger rooms and more convenient to the casino with all its restaurants & shops. I also use the d'Oreale Grande for folks who want something more upmarket. There's a City Lodge actually connected to the terminals - https://www.citylodge.co.za/cl13.php - so it's the most convenient. Only one at a mall close enough to use would be about 15 minutes away at the Eastgate Mall - https://www.citylodge.co.za/cy2.php

We usually stay at the Metcourt Suites which is one star up from the Metcourt.

The rooms are large and modern although lack natural light. A decent breakfast is included in the overnight rate.

There's direct access to the complex with its entertainment and restaurants.

We usually have a car but there is a complimentary shuttle from the airport.

Hi Cewpitt

Our experience travelling to South Africa has shown jetlag not to be a problem, despite the bad experiences we have had with it flying to other countries.

We believe this to be for a couple of reasons.

Firstly due to the fact that the direction of travel influences severity of jet lag. Flying westward is easier for the body to tolerate than is flying eastward because flying westward, the day is lengthened and the body can adapt easier. On our first ever trip to SA we actually got off the plane and drove out to Kruger Park, 6 hours and then went on a game drive at the lodge and had dinner all without a wink of sleep and still in the same clothes after some 30+ hours!

Secondly we gain eight hours the minute we step off the plane. The flight from Sydney gets into JHB around 4.15pm. Remember this is after midnight for us, then you need to get through customs/ immigration and do anything you need to do at the airport such as phone/sim collection and so on. By this time we have been up for nearly 24 hours and I don’t know about others but we are well ready for sleep by now and certainly do not desire to be walking around shops or parks, in fact last time I started to doze off leaning on the luggage trolley in the phone shop.

Then we go and check in to our hotel and get to the room and after a freshen up we just crash into bed. Of course it is still daylight outside but with curtains shut it does not affect us at all, the room is soundproofed and by now for us its around 2am.

We then have a wonderful sleep and wake up refreshed to start our adventure. For us that means heading into the terminal for a hearty breakfast and loads of coffee at the 24 hour Mugg and Bean then collecting our car nice and early [5am ish] thanks to the eight hour time gain. Now for you this will be different because you are flying out again but if you are catching a nice early flight to the falls you may want to do just as we do.

We personally do not see the need to go on shuttles to further hotels when are totally exhausted from the trip, [unless you want more upmarket facilities etc] so always stay at the City Lodge hotel mentioned by Dave above which is right at the terminal. It is fairly new, very clean and modern, reasonably priced and absolutely perfect for a nights stop over and good sleep. You do not even need to walk out of the terminal to get there, it’s just via a walkway and all under the same roof. Nooee above has said something similar, by time they got to their hotel they were too exhausted to use the facilities anyway.

Hope this helps

Hello, check out the Airport Grand Hotel, they have a shuttle service, its just 5 minutes away, not as frenetic as Emperors Palace, very reasonably priced, and there is a shopping centre with restaurants just over the road, and a huge Shopping Mall, just down the block. i use this for my clients and it is really value for money.

We have just booked to stay one night at the City Lodge which is in the airport. We used their programme bid2stay which means you offer to pay an amount for your room and if successful, it's yours. There is better availability at weekends, with fewer rooms during busier weekdays. We got our room for about 50% the advertised cost. We chose to stay in the airport because we arrive early evening and didn't want the hassle of taxis and shuttle buses.

Well done Longton, looks like you got a great deal on an already reasonably priced hotel.

I think sometimes people don't realise how exhausted you can actually feel after a very long flight. It's dark outside and you are in a foreign country and for first timers it can be a little unsettling searching for a shuttle pick up or even a taxi. Much better to start fresh in broad daylight IMO

Hi cewpitt,

Personally, I think thesandmans makes a lot of sense, and there's nothing like first hand personal experience on a particular situation to give good advice.

I think from a convenience and simplicity point of view, one of the airport hotels makes the most sense, with the Intercontinental being the most conveniently located only 50 metres from the International Arrivals Terminal, and then the City Lodge and lastly the Southern Sun. From a rate point of view the Intercontinental is the most expensive, followed by the Southern Sun and City Lodge which are probably similar, but with Longtons suggestion the City Lodge would be the winner.

Enjoy your trip.
