Toll Roads from Joburg to Sun City

Could any one please advise if there are toll roads on this route between Joburg Airport to Sun City. We are hiring a Car and have read of some tolls in the area. Is this correct. We would rather be prepared.

The N4 route has tolls.

But there's other routes you can take which avoid the tolls which we usually take -and make for more interesting driving anyway.

Thank you Sandsy . Could you please give me an idea of this route. We are also hiring a GPS for this trip. Our accommodation is in Rustenburg for this period and will make this our base.

About 180Km in all, the route I use to avoid tolls, is as follows:

Take Malibongwe drive (R512) out of Johannesburg.

Pass Lanseria International Airport.

At the T junction, turn LEFT. You are still on R512

Pass the Golfing estate.

Turn RIGHT, following the R512.

Over the bridge at the Lake, turn RIGHT at the next T junction (R560).

Over the hill (Kommando Nek), and down to the 4 way stop.

Turn Left This is the R104.

Pass Chameleon village with all the arts and crafts.

Pass the Elephant and monkey Sanctuary.

At the next stop, turn right (Towards Brits) you are now back on R512

Bear left, onto the N4.... there are no tolls on this short section of the N4

Take the next exit left, and cross over the highway to the right You will see signs to Pilanesberg, and Sun City. This is the R556.

This road will take you directly to Sun City (entrance on your right).

If you follow this road from Sun City, and go left at the next 4 way stop, you will get onto the R565, which will take you into Rustenburg

Although toll roads are on the cards from OR Tambo to the north of Johannesburg (along the N1 south) towards the Fourways area, they are not yet up and running and we are all hoping that it will be some while yet. :-)

From OR Tambo, along R24 WEST, then N3 NORTH, to Buccleuch interchange, then (counter intuitively), N1 SOUTH to Wm. Nicol, then north on Wm. Nicol, to Four ways area.

Fortunately, no tolls yet. Hopefully never ....... support OUTA!!
