bicycling in Ketchikan

We are a family of 4 with 2 teenagers and are considering riding bicycles in Ketchikan. We are arriving via cruise ship (0800 to 1700), and whether we rent will depend on the weather, as we do not like riding in the rain. If we happen to arrive on a dry day, how is the drive north along the Tongass Highway to Ward Lake? We are mostly concerned about narrow roads with traffic.

Ketchikan is not a bike friendly town. I know you are imagining quiet little country roads but in reality we have more cars per capita than almost anyplace in the US (we use 'em for umbrellas), narrow roads, poor shoulders, and lots and lots of industrial traffic, tour buses, big pickups, etc all going 55 out the road to Ward Lake in an endless stream because there is only one main artery. There is one place on Water St. next to the Lutheran Church (across from Berth 4) that rents bikes. If you were to rent them, I would go the opposite direction SOUTH of town where a waterfront bike path starts after the Coast Guard base (about a mile from the cruise ship dock) and goes to Saxman Totem park, Bugge beach and beyond. That's a very scenic, safe ride. southeastexposure.com/ketchikan-town-bike-re…
