My wife and I visited Ketchikan in 1996 as part of a Cruise West small ship cruise that started there. Part of the tour involved going to Misty Fjords and then doing a tour of the township. We were there in the last week of August with the salmon run seemingly at its peak. It's a great place and we had a great time.
We're in the early stages of planning to possibly go back in 2013, this time with our two children who will be 12 and 13 then. We'll skip the cruises this time and just spend a couple of days in town.
(1) Can we get a self-contained rental for several days ? (Last time we stayed in the Westmark Cape Fox Lodge, I think)
(2) Are there day tours that go out on the water ? Any recommendations ?
(3) The most convenient time for us to be there may well be at the end of June, but we could come about a month later. What are our chances of the salmon running at these two times ?
