We just returned from two weeks in Alaska and it was wonderful. We started in Fairbanks. Visited the Chena Hot Springs resort and used the hot springs and also toured the Ice Museum. Both were very worthwile. I thought it would be kinda just OK, but I was really happy we went there. The ice museum was lots of fun. We had two apple martini's there.
We took the 12 hour train trip from Fairbanks to Anchorage because we didn't have time to stop in Talkeetna or Denali. The train trip was well worth the money paid. We rode the Gold Star car on the AK Railroad. We got sooo many good pictures along the way and the train was as good as the best trains in europe.
We spend about 10 days on the Kenai Peninsula. Lodging was a house we rented in Clam Gulch.
The guys went fishing at the Russian River Hatchery area (caught their limits each day after they got past the learning curve). The guys also went halibut and cod fishing one day and caught there limits early.
I went on day hikes with the ladies in the group.
We took Mako's water taxi from Homer to glacier point and took a hike to a glacier (Gwrink spelling?). When the water taxi dropped us off there was a black bear beach combing and then when we were waiting on the beach to be picked up we saw a bear again (close up).
Alaska is well worth a visit if you enjoy mountains, biking, hiking, fishing, photography. We'll be back someday.
