We will be in Homer for 2 days.Besides seeing the bears, what other advice do people have for us to do whilst we are there in August 2008.

The Visitor Center looks interesting:

And if you like to fish:

Beluga Slough a boardwalk bird paradise & Bishop's Beach are right next to each other.

Halibut Cove Lagoon kayaking is a beginner's dream with sea otters, porpoises, sea stars, eagles, loons, etc. Karl will rent you kayaks & take you over in his water taxi. He also has a cabin to rent in Halibut Cove:

We rent the state cabins for a few days in Halibut Cove & kayak from there. Karl drops us & picks us up. It's a dream vacation.

What do you like doing? You could take a boat to Seldovia across the bay. When I was there earlier this month I took a boat/water taxi across the bay to the hiking trails in the state park and took a day hike. Just beautiful. With a 5-6 hour level, easy hike you can walk to a glacier lake and see the glacier.

Definitely request the visitors guide and post what interests you have.

My recommendations are:

True North Kayaking...the full day trip. Even for newbies they will take good care of you...it is a workout for beginners.

Emerald Air Bear touring with Ken and Chris Day...I wouldn't travel with anyone else. You can prevue your possible adventure by watching "Bears" a specialty video made by the Federal Wildlife Organiztion (US) featuring Ken, Chris and the Bears of Katmi NP.

Both of these activities are 8am-5pm trips...make your reservations soon.

There is also a local wildlife science facility in town.

If you haven't gone yet, I say enjoy the outdoors hiking and kayaking and enjoy the seafood. Go over to China Poot Bay (Peterson Bay side) and Kayak with a group and also hike. We used the Coastal Studies program (book at the Yurt on the spit) and they have an all day excursion for tide pooling, hiking and kayaking, all guided. It was great. Great good at Cafe Cups, Spitfire Grill, and Land's End Chart room. Also check out the galleries in the area, some beautiful art in Homer. Oh, if you are a fisherperson, try Halibut fishing. All day, pretty pricey, but we came home with the best Halibut we have ever eaten. I think because the fish were much smaller this time they are so tender and perfect! Enjoy Homer, I love it there.

How about wine tasting?

We stayed at the Bear Creek Winery and did their tasting. It was fun and a little different from all the outdoor activities. www.bearcreekwinery.com

Kayak. Our famioy loved it. True North kayak was wonderful adn we had a full day of kayaking and seeing some critters.

Wlkt he beach durign low tide and see the many tide pools. Loved the people here and like everythibg else it can get to bee expensive but we dined at the Black Olive or somethign liek that--great pizza and sandwiches. WE did a lot of fish and chips as it was so tasty, yet pricey.
