This is a spin-off from my post in the Valdez forum...(but I took Valdez out of the picture for this trip)
I am leaving Denali Park on a Tuesday in my own car and would like to be in Haines by 4:30 Friday for a 6:30 PM ferry. (I have reservations on the Sunday 6:30 PM ferry, but hope to go standby Friday if possible)
Since border crossings are always unpredictable, I don't want to even think of getting from Tok to Haines in one day!
Tues: Denali to Paxson area if taking Denali Hwy, (or to Tok if not)
Weds: Paxson - Beaver Creek (or Tok to Burwash Landing?)
Thurs: Beaver Creek or Burwash to Haines
Fri: relax in Haines, sail for Juneau, stop worrying about timetables :)
Thoughts/ideas/other suggestions? Other places to stay between Tok and Haines, from which we could make it to Haines in a day or two?
Budget accommodations or campgrounds matter, too -- Tok has a hostel, which is appealing. But, weather permitting, I'd like to take the Denali Highway and we won't hit the road early enough Tuesday to take that route and make Tok comfortably in a day.
Rushing through and "missing things" not so much of an issue -- have a long meandering trip planned and will be back here anyway -- but I am not a mega-mile road warrior and do want to enjoy the journey as much as possible...
