This place looks very nice online but I don't see a review of it in the B & B section or in a forum search. Mombear are you familiar with this place? www.bearlodgebb.com
Thanks as always!
Yes, I am very familiar with this place from the outside.......we drive past it each time we go out to Chilkoot River and Lake........the location is wonderful if you are a fisher person or enjoy bear watching in the summer.........the lodge itself has a nice deck across the front and sits back off the road with a nice sloping lawn and a view of the ocean inlet across the street.....there is a central shared kitchen which would come in handy.....save a little money from eating out........it's about 10 miles from town and there are only a few other houses near there.........the price looks very reasonable, and ooh, didn't know they had a hot tub......the exterior has been painted since the photo was taken on the website, kind of a light beige color now.....the only concern would be that I saw a For Sale sign on it last time I went by.......if you're thinking about reservations for next year, you might want to have back up plans, just in case it sells.........
I knew I could count on a good observation from you - the insight from destination experts is so helpful in trip planning! We are looking at lodging for next summer so the for sale sign is good to at least be aware of! We often plan our trips far in advance and people think we are crazy, but then I can do a lot of research and those really special places are usually available so it works for us!
Glad it's helpful for you Paulsen.......let me know if you have any other questions.......and yep, I'm one of those plan way ahead of time people, too......
This is my first posting, and part of the reason I joined this site was so that I could recommend the Bear Lodge B&B. My wife and I stayed there for two nights in June of 2011, and it was well worth it. The hosts, Barb and Jim, were very gracious and provided a wonderful breakfast. The lodge itself is in great condition, very beautiful and spacious. There was a bald eagle perched atop one of the trees in front the first night we were there.
As for the sale, the owners did seem to think that they'd like to spend more time back in the lower 48, in order to be closer to family, so that could explain the 'For Sale' sign.
If Barb and Jim are still running the Lodge next summer, I would not hesitate to recommend you giving it a stay. The price is a bit above some of the other B&B's in town, but I think there may be a discount for stays of more than one night. Regardless, the Bear Lodge is worth the money.
Mister E, I totally agree with your experience.....the lodge is in a great location, has wonderful views and I have met Barb and Jim and know that they are very nice people.......they usually winter down in the lower 48 but are very attentive to the several properties they own around Haines......I wouldn't hesitate to stay there, but I would definitely talk to the owners to make sure that they can honor your reservations, if it is sold......(so far I think it is still for sale)
Here's a google map link to it:
This should be the view out (west) of Lutak Inlet. Spin the map around and you'll be looking at the lodge.
I've requested that TA add it to the hotel/B&B section so people can review it.
