Roughing it! Advice for 2 backpackers! -hostels & activities

Gday! First time using Tripadvisor and WOW what a great tool!

Okay, so my partner and I are headed to Raro in a few weeks time! We are looking at having lots of fun on a shoestring budget.. Hoping to meet lots of locals & other backpackers! Have lots of laughs and see the beauty that is Rarotonga!

Any reviews/feedback about a good / value for money backpackers/hostel?

Also activities? Cheap things to do?

We will be hiring scooters/motorbikes (or a car if weather isn't the best).. Looking to do some hiking, snorkelling, beaching, drinking etc! Oh and yummy food! Heard the markets are great!

any general advice would be much appreciated!

Kia Orana Ciska,

Welcome to the forum.

If you haven't already decided upon accommodation, I recommend you begin searching now and make a booking as soon as possible.

Our Immigration will require the name of your accommodator when you arrive onto Rarotonga. But also there has been a large increase in visitor numbers this past month heading into the cooler months. Have a look around TA for reviews on budget accommodation. Given your interests above, staying anywhere around Muri, Arorangi, Tupapa, Avarua and Atupa will get your activities off to a good start.

There are plenty of hire scooters around, with 3 day and longer deals available. Remember to bring your own driver's licence to apply for a Cook Islands driver's licence at Police HQ in Avarua (town area).

The food stalls located at Punanga Nui but also around Avarua offer good value. And there are some great cheap eats in the districts/villages as well - including Arorangi, Aroa (opposite the marine reserve) and in Muri.

Enjoy your holiday. Kia manuia.
