Driving in Costa Rica

We are flying into the San Jose Airport (SJO) on Dec. 18, 2013. We are renting a car and driving from the airport to the city of Liberia in the Guanacaste Province via Hwy. 1. This is our first visit to Costa Rica. What is the condition of Hwy.1? We would appreciate any driving advice (especially about this highway) from more experienced travelers. Thank you!

Regarding the OP, I would echo comments by others with much more experience driving in CR than I have:

Be patient. Stay alert. Don't drive at night. Although road conditions are generally good, be prepared for the occasional roadway damage, rockslide, or other problem. Other drivers who are in a big hurry can and will pass you ... be prepared for them to return swiftly to your lane, w/o a signal or what many would consider to be safe clearance.

We have not used GPS. If you're going between two locations that are not directly linked by a main road, I suggest knowing what towns/cities you need to pass through to get to your destination. Other than the panamericano (route 1), few highways are marked by route #s, so knowing where to turn may require looking for the sign to a town rather than a route #.

Driving in CR can be fun, you'll get to enjoy a beautiful country and set your own agenda and schedule. Good luck!

Kathieallegrezza, Some good information on this topic with different views. Some appropriate and some not; however; have a great trip and do some research about driving in Costa Rica. My final comment is to be safe and enjoy your visit. Be alert if you decide to drive in Costa Rica due to the many dangers noted by myself and other members. Have a great trip!!!

Would like your feedback after the trip if you decide to drive a rental. Thanks and Aloha from Hawaii!!!

This is a cut and paste from them as well. The OP needs to know what others have experienced first hand and during a recent trip.

"The good news is that potholes are no longer the worst thing while driving in Costa Rica! The bad news is missing manhole covers now are..."

Fact's are what the OP is looking for. Regards
