Great experience with Wild Rider car rental

I know that there's lots of discussion about 4x4 rentals in Costa Rica. I just needed to say that our experience with Wild Rider rentals was perfect! We were met at the airport with our clean 4x4. Jose gave us great advise regarding traffic, road conditions, and what to do in the event of vehicle breakdown. We were given a map that Jose "customized" for us, outlining the best travel route. The 4x4 return was even easier. Just dropped it off right at the departure gate, where Jose was waiting to meet us. A nice 4x4, great customer service, and a fair price made us Wild Rider fans!

And where did the "customized" map took you? How was driving in Costa Rica? Did you use GPS or only a map?

I had already booked our overnight accomodations. The "customized" map gave us the best route, including interesting restaurants and attractions along the way. We flew into San Jose, arriving at 2. After getting our 4x4, we drove to Poas Lodge and Restaurant for one night. Visited the volcano in the AM, then drove to Fortuna, where we stayed for 2 nights at Hotel Arenal Kokoro. Then drove through the Nicoya peninsula to Santa Teresa for 4 nights at Manala Hotel. Next, we drove to Paquera, where we boarded the ferry to Puntarenas, then continued our drive to Atenas. We stayed one night at the Orchid Tree B & B, then made our way to the airport the next day.

The southern Nicoya peninsula roads are bad, but what an experience! We did not use GPS, either. We managed just fine!

Thanks, useful info, specially about GPS not being essential for driving in Costa Rica.

We found Wild Rider 4 x 4 rentals on birding sites in the UK and they had such good reviews we decided to try them. What a great company they are. Brilliant customer service and great communication. We met Jose when he bought our car to our hotel (Bougainvillea) which is about 30 mins from their office. On the way back to the office he explained everything we needed to know for our trip and put all 4 of the hotels we were staying into the Sat. Nav. Thorsten ( the owner) filled in the best routes for our travels on the maps they gave us and advised us to get some local currency for the tolls. Our Daihatsu Beko was problem free which was a blessing considering some of the roads we travelled on (Monte Verde). Wild Rider go beyond the call of duty for their customers and give a much more personal service than the major car hire companies. This was our first trip to Costa Rica and we were a bit apprehensive about driving there. Thank you Wild Rider, Thorsten and Jose for making it easier for us.

Dalan, is there a chance for s trip report? I suppose birding was your main goal, and if so, you have surely visited some of the less travelled parts of Costa Rica, it will be very interesting to read more.

Our first hotel was the Bougainvillea in Heredia which we used as an airport hotel. We stayed for 2 days when we arrived and 1 night before travelling home. I found this hotel when I looked at birding tours around Costa Rica. They all seem to use it because of the 10 acres of gardens with many species of birds. Second hotel was the Aparthotel Vista Pacifico just outside Jaco. Trips in the car to Playa Hermosa and Estrellos Este allowed us to photograph many birds including the famed Macaws which arrive in the trees at midday. My husband photographed many other birds walking around the surrounding area in the early morning. After 4 days we left for the famous Monte Verde Cloud Forest. Bit of a nightmare journey up with 38kms of dirt road but truly worth it when you arrive. We stayed at the Belmar Hotel which also had beautiful gardens and numerous birds. There are many tours here including The Hummingbird Gallery which is $2 entry and you can stay and photograph the hummers all day. Easily reached by car. Next to the Monte Verde Reserve. After 4 days we left for Turrialba which is stunning and the Rancho Naturalista which is a birders hotel with trails and specialist guides. Place to visit nearby is CATIE for herons, Jacana, Gallinule and many more. We finished back at Bougainvillea. We photographed over 100 new species of birds and other animals. Costa Rica is amazing, safe to drive and the people are wonderful. All my reviews of hotels are on Trip Advisor.

Dalan, thank you very much for your great report. Looking forward to come close to your bird count on my next trip to Costa Rica. I will also use Wild Rider, as on my previous two travels they were exactly as you described them.

Thanks for the great info on Wild Rider, I have a Bego reserved in 63 days and thought they would take me into San Jose to pick up the vehicle, so its great news that they bring the vehicle to the airport. That's why I love this forum, I keep having questions answered that I hadn't thought to ask.

We rented a 4x4 from Wild Rider for a two week trip in early August 2013. Their rates were reasonable, the staff charming (mainly German, with fluent English and Spanish) and helpful. Car was I guess about 2-3 years old, had 60,000 km on the clock, was in excellent condition and performed perfectly throughout our trip. It was delivered and collected from our hotel on the edge of San Jose for a modest fee. Unfortunately the car was broken into while parked next to a remote beach, and the door lock damaged in the process. But unlike many car hire companies, we were contacted about the cost of repair - at $80 about as reasonable as one could ask, and cost price to them - and they had the courtesy of asking if we would agree to it, which we were happy to do.

I'd definitely recommend them.
