hotel within walking distance of caribe terminal

My husband and I and 2 friends will be heading back to Puerto Viejo this winter for my 40th birthday! We have already booked the sloth house at la Kukula for the week of Feb. 8th-15th. We'll be flying in at different times the night before and will be meeting up at a hotel downtown. We will walk to the caribe terminal the next morning/afternoon. We've never stayed in San Jose before and I've been doing a lot of research to try to find the right place for all of us.

We are looking for a clean place for about $25-40pp per night. We are looking at these three places-

Hotel Kekoldi

Hotel Don carlos

Hotel Aanjuez

I'd like to be in a decent neighborhood within walking distance to a good restaurants and somewhere to possibly get a couple of drinks after. We don't gamble, aren't big drinkers, and will not be bringing any friends back to the room! The next morning we'll probably walk around to see a few sites and then head to Puerto Viejo.

How is the Barrio Aranjuez vs Barrio Amon? Also, out of these three, which hotel would you choose and why?

I would vote for the Don Carlos, would definitely be within your budget if you room shared, but I think avg is closer to $80US per room. Clean, good restaurant with a "people watch" style patio, great old colonial hotel, good size rooms, very secure, and within an easy walk of the terminal.

You might add the Dunn Inn to your list tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g309293-d301485…

Bit closer to the terminal, redone restaurant, clean rooms, and a friendly vibe.

My 2 picks, both within the budget. Barrio Amon is not a place to walk around at night though, plenty of cheap taxis are recommended. Also, if you're in the area of the 2 hotels, try Soda Peru tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g309293-d2…

good sized portions, well priced. If you can find the Radio Shack, you're there.

Have a great holiday.

Thanks CajonTraveler!

I did take a look at the Dunn Inn. It looks like a room with 2 beds will be a bit out of our friends price range.

I know my friends want a cheap place to eat and Soda Peru might just be perfect! I also saw some mention of a JR ribs and Cafe Mundo. When I look up Cafe Mundo on here it says the price range is between $100-$400! Lol! I'm going to assume that is wrong! Any ideas what range it does fall in?

Cafe Mundo is somewhat expensive, dinner with 2 glasses of wine for 2 can be $40US. There are less expensive entrées as well, pasta, salads and such, but it does have nice seating and ambiance, worth visiting. technically it's within walking distance of where you will be staying, but taxi at night please.

JR's is an interesting place, not all taxis know where it is, great ribs, portions good size, and not terribly expensive. I like it because I am a carnivore, so price is secondary as long as I can gnaw on some bones. Big screen tv, fair number of middle income Ticos seem to find it sat nite, so it's busy..again..walkable, near the entrance to the zoo (for taxi).

Don Carlos puts on a nice dinner, quiet, well priced, good food if you are staying there and don't feel like travel.

On another note, if I may, as it's b/day time, you might want to find Castro's Bar, in Barrio Mexico, frommers.com/destinations/…N32547.html about a $4.00US taxi ride, all taxis know it, 2 levels, main floor dancing (salsa, bachata etc..) with Ticas and Ticos not looking to hook up, just dance, and boy can they ever dance. You can all join in too, small cover, upstairs is Karaoke, Spanish and English, my fav place in SJ, you can do most anything in English and hear some pretty good Spanish singers (plus a few "interesting" singers trying English). Action starts after 9PM, always a table available. Good pub food, decent prices, caters to Ticos but travelers welcome. Taxi is a must.

Have fun, and enjoy your birthday!

Castro's bar sounds like a lot of fun! Thanks! I'll mention it to my friends and see if it is something they are interested in!

It's good to know that Don Carlos has a decent restaurant as we may be very tired from traveling. I need to talk with everyone going to see where they want to stay, but Don Carlos seems to be what we're looking for.

I did read about bringing "friends" back to your room in a review about Dunn's Inn. I don't really have an opinion on that, probably best to stay away from it if possible. Taylor's inn looks okay but seems to have mixed reviews. I still think Don Carlos is the better choice.

No one has mentioned Hotel Kekoldi (which gets great reviews) or Hotel Aranjuez yet. Any pros or cons on these two?

Aranjuez has nice rooms at fair prices - cheapest option is with a shared bathroom.

I have never been, but many of my Caribbean friends use the Aranjuez and have highly recommended them. Simple and inexpensive.

I have stayed at the Aranjuez a couple of times - but it was several years back. It was definitely an excellent value. The rooms were fine and the breakfast was great. I tried to stay there on other occasions but they always seemed to be booked.

I did walk to the centre of San Jose - not that far, but not right there. However although I did it in the evening too, I really would not recommend it. Some of the streets I passed seemed dark and quite deserted.

In general in San Jose after dark it is always adviseable to take a taxi to your destination.

Aranjuez is my hotel of choice when in San Jose. it's inexpensive, clean and has the best breakfast in town. It is, like the Dunn Inn (which I don't like at all) not walking distance to the bus terminal but a $2 taxi ride. Choosing between Aranjuez and Kekoldi I would go for the first.

Aranjuez is a good decent choice...about 10 minutes by taxi to Caribe Terminal...simple but nice little place!
