EuropCar seems to be running a scam with USave in San Jose. We had a large group that we were travelling with, so rented a Land Cruiser, which was supposed to be able to accomodate 7 passengers and 5 large suitcases, according to the EuropCar website. When we arrived, they didn't have our vehicle, nor anything even close in size. They drove us over to USave, assuring that we would be reimbursed for any cost difference. We wound up with an old, beat-up 12-passenger van. It was terrible! You couldn't get up to speed on the highway if the air conditioning was running, so there were 7 of us on a 4 hour drive in the heat of May with no a/c. Not fun. We wound up actually having to pay MORE than the Land Cruiser that we reserved. After several attempts to contact EuropCar to get it resolved, were told that we were only referred to USave and whatever we paid was our responsibility.
Additionally, we emailed in advance to ensure that we wouldn't have to pay extra insurance fees because we have Premium Car Rental Protection through Amex that covers everything. We were still told that we'd be charged an extra $15/day for insurance.
