Hilton Guanacaste vs Doubletree Puntarenas

We are a family of 5 with 3 teenagers. We know we want to spend 3-4 days at "the beach" while in CR. We have plenty of Hilton points so are looking at these two all-inclusives--either the Doubletree Puntarenas or the Hilton in Guanacaste. What would you advise? We like relaxing on comfy lounge chairs and playing in the surf. Snorkeling is also a family favorite activity.

The beach in Puntarenas is not particularly attractive IMO and I think you would be much happier at the Hilton Papagayo. Check hotel reviews for both properties and look at photos of the beaches taken by visitors. Forget the publicity photos taken by the hotels. A more accurate representation is what you'll find posted with the reviews.

Was at Double Tree Puntarenas 3yrs ago. The resort back then in terms of the buildings/ rooms were getting worn out. Food, pool and staff were good to excellent. The beach/surf was a disaster. Security guards warned you about walking on the beach and if you decided to keep going they asked for your name and room number asking you to check back in when you returned. This in case you became missing in action. The beach is not good for lounging or other activities. Keeping in mind this was 3 years ago. Things could have changed.

In terms of overall quality, Hilton Papagayo is way nicer, better food, more upscale experience and nice beach (but no surfing). The Doubletree has a couple of advantages in terms of location, and you would be able to explore more of the country using that hotel as a base....you can easily do day trips to the Central Valley, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio from there. Doubletree did just renovate the rooms recently, as well as some of the restaurants, so they've been upgraded and have all the Hilton standard features (bedding, in room amenities, etc). The snorkeling in general in CR isn't a big draw, but the snorkeling is more accessible from Guanacaste. You'd be more limited in terms of snorkeling options from the Doubletree, there is no snorkeling off the beach there (but there is a good surf break just down the road)

I recently stayed at the Doubletree with my family (2 kids girl/boy) and we can definitively say that the place was ideal for families with children. The hotel has loads of activities to keep young children occupied including a games room (although heavily air-conditioned) with everything from ping-pong to standup dance videogames and a popcorn bar. We had originally booked our stay using a service from http://www.vacationscostarica.com however our plans changed and we ended up going directly with Doubletree as opposed to heading in to the Guanacaste area. We are from the southern region of the country and Doubletree was a shorter trip.

So my vote goes to Doubletree however either way I'm sure you'll have a great time no matter which hotel you choose.

Pura vida.
