puntarenas vs. guanacaste vs nicoya areas

Getting conflicting advice on these areas. Would like to visit end of May(yes, I know it is green season) There will be 7 of us-2 oldsters and 5 young adult children(age 22-27) with friends/significant others. Would like to rent a house with very close beach access. Want to surf, swim, sight see and enjoy some sunny weather. Read one post where it said further north is very boring but less likely chance of rain during May. Would also like access to some restaurants. Which area is best for my family-Jaco,Mal Pais, Samara within those regions? Are we pretty much guaranteed rain every afternoon-its just a matter or whether it is a sprinkle or a deluge?

With young adults, and surfing a focus, the best spot would be Playa Tamarindo, as it has many surf breaks for all levels, surf schools, surf rentals and surf north and south of town. It has a vibrant, yet low key nightlife.

If flying into Liberia (LIR) its a easy 1.4 hour drive.

Otherwise, you next option that is further and harder to reach, but more charming less developed, is Mal Pais and Santa Teresa area.

Weather is really not a factor in May, afternoon rains if that, cools down a hot day, siesta time.

Avoid Jaco like the plague.

Novice surfers. Would like to do ecological tours and have access to local restaurants as well. Isn't Tamrindo extremely commercialized? Don't want to feel as if we're in the Caymans.Considering Mal Pais area-will have car-how accessable are the preserves/volcano/restaurants from that area? Everyone excellent swimmers(all life guards) but all the pictures show roaring waves-are there beaches in that area to just swim and enjoy the water? Thank you

You may check Manuel Antonio National PArk area...very much what you are looking for...and just 3 hours from SJO...

Check...Buena Vista Villas and Casas...Tulemar Bungalows...great places...nice secluded beach...and near some great surfing beaches...just 45 minutes from there you can visit Dominical beach and Uvita beach...great surfing areas around...
