Mal Pais has only one beach that is nice and that is at the very end of the road, past the fisherman's village and borders on Cabo Blanco Park on the Mal Pais side. The beach is locally called the Swiss Beach.

Other than that, the beaches in Mal Pais are all rock, so head north to Santa Teresa, Playa Hermosa and Playa Manzanillo. Fabulous beaches!!! Playa Hermosa and Playa Manzanillo have beaches that are less crowded and you can walk forever and hardly cross paths with anyone.

Have you been way north up the beach from Montezuma? The beaches farther out 30-45minutes are MUCH bigger and MUCH emptier and less rocky. It's on the way to El Chorro waterfalls, which pour into the ocean (close to two hours from Montezuma). It's where most of the Montezuma surfing goes on.

Here's an interactive panorama of El Chorro falls, it's worth the 2 hour hike :)

This is take from he top of the waterfalls.

Yes the beach that Gary is talking about is a must do. It is called Playa Grande although there are other beaches in the country called the same name. It is a large stretch of beach with few people and a nice walk to get there along beaches with volcanic rock and diving pelicans. The beach sometimes goes back into the trees and back onto the beach. On the way back you can reward yourself with a drink at Ylang Ylang resort, only reached by walking on the beach as you rest and stare at the ocean.
