Montezuma to Arenal how far out of the way is Monteverde?

We are taking a 12 day trip to Costa Rica and are staying in Montezuma for seven nights then driving to Arenal for three nights. Should we drive to Monteverde for one night and one day? How much extra travel time is this and is it worth it for one night?

From Montezuma / Puntarenas (you will use the ferry?) Monteverde is not much off the way. From Puntarenas, about 4 hrs to La Fortuna / Arenal, 2 hrs to Monteverde. Monteverde to La Fortuna is 3 hours. Thus you will not add much to your driving/traveling time. However, do not stay one only night. Just not worthy. Try and stay 2 nights, place is very different then either Nicoya peninsula either Arenal. And you will have a chance to "cool down" a bit :)) !

Everything is farther in Costa Rica, you can't go by the distance but the roads themselves and how long it's going to take so you really want to plan more time there since you're on the road for so long. Especially if you're traveling near Christmas or Easter, the roads are busier and the ferry is insane.

If you've never driven in Costa Rica, you might want to opt for a GPS in your rental. You can find decent maps but the problem is figuring out where you are (there aren't a lot of street signs).

Speaking of maps, the FREE iPhone / iPad app called Galileo can download a nice Costa Rica map. You can download it in advance and its already on your iDevice (you don't need to connect to the internet to use it, but you must have the GPS option (all iPads don't come with GPS). Make sure you download the Costa Rica map in the settings while your on WiFi.

This isn't a GPS turn-by-turn routing software, just think of it as a digital map that tells you where you are. And it's free. (You can download maps for pretty much anywhere in the world).

I use this map for traveling and hiking and it's actually got decent coverage of the Montezuma/surrounding area (a lot of paid GPS software doesn't). I've even paid for all the extras with it (bookmarks, breadcrumb trails and importing in other kinds of maps).
