Montezuma worth the trip for 1-2 nights?

Hi all. My husband and I have 5 days to spend in Costa Rica in July (unfortunately, no longer than that). We'll be in Jaco at Villa Caletas for our friend's wedding for at least 3 nights, possibly 4. Would it be worth it to take the water taxi over to Montezuma to stay at Ylang Ylang for 1 or 2 nights -- or will that be too much hassle for too little time there?

I've heard Montezuma is more of a chill and relax type place, so that's the reason I'm concerned only 1 full day (at best) would not be enough to make the trip/cost worth it.

The alternative is to stay in Jaco all 5 nights and do day trips (maybe the Tortuga Island tour one day and Manuel Antonio one day).

I've been stressing about what to do as I need to make arrangements, so figured I'd ask here. :) Any advice is much appreciated!

For clarification, we'd be flying into San Jose around noon on a Thursday, heading to Tambor on a 2:00 flight, which I think would put us in Montezuma around 3:30pm, and would be able to stay until Saturday at 9:30, when we'd catch the water taxi over to Jaco. Hope this extra information helps on whether it'd be worth the trip over!

It seems as though you already know what you would have to go through in order to make it happen, so only you can answer whether you are willing to do that or not.

Ylang Ylang is a really cool place as is Montezuma. That one full day of hanging on the beaches, enjoying the town and then enjoying beach front dinner may be worth it. Montezuma and Jaco are worlds apart, so it would give you a couple of very different perspectives.

Can you clarify how you think Montezuma and Jaco are worlds apart? I am having trouble visualizing what Jaco will be like... I have heard not to stay there but I'm not sure exactly why.

Jaco is not for everybody, but perfect for some. It's a mini beach city with several high rise condos, a couple casinos, loads of shops, restaurants and bars. It's best for surfers as there are large waves, but if you go to the south end of the beach, the waves are smaller.

Montezuma is a small laid back village with some shops, restaurants and small eco-oriented hotels and lodges. The beach has some waves, but is better suited for boogey boarding and swimming.

I haven't been to Villa Caletas, but I pass it every year on my way through and it's not really in Jaco. So being surrounded by the more busy, tourist scene of Jaco will be more a choice for you. But either way, I'd say go. We just got back from our trip and I really enjoyed my 2 nights at Ylang Ylang.

Montezuma is tiny bohemian town. I was there last year, so maybe didn't feel I had to cover as much, but 2 nights allowed me to do a little browsing in town and have a local lunch before hiking to the base of the big waterfall and enjoying a nice swim and returning for quick dip in the pool before enjoying beautiful romantic dinner (made with organic ingredients whenever possible) by the sea. Breakfasts are just as enjoyable and an 8:30am yoga class overlooking that exquisite view will leave you feeling renewed!

Oh, and the monkeys come and visit by the pool... they're pretty cute.

We also saw dolphins and sea turtles from the speedboat on the way back.

But don't fret. You can't really go wrong in CR!

Just to add my 2 cents worth.........ABSOLUTELY!

The first time visiting CR, my wife and I traveled extensiively in Guanacaste Province and ended the trip in Montezuma. It was love at first sight, smell, touch etc, etc.

Ylang Ylang is truly magical! I have stayed there a few times and is a great choice! Dining, got to hit Playas de la Artistas and Puggo's. Dinner at Ylang Ylang is perfect as the sun sets so you can gaze on the ocean and the incredible surrondings. Ask for Christian, the waiter, who has been very kind to my family over the years. But that is not to say you can go wrong with any of the folks that work there.

Jaco, not that great, in my opinion and the other strings were spot on regarding what you will find there. But, I know many folks who like the town as it has a more metropolitan feel to it than the other small towns dotting the coastline.

I envy your upcoming travels, but wish you the best! ENJOY!

Montezuma is totally worth it. And the taxi boat is the way to do it.

FYI - I used to go to Jaco (and travel around), then I discovered Montezuma, now I just go there and go the Waterfalls every day.

But Ylang Ylang is NOT Montezuma, it's a super super nice hotel 15 minute walk down the beach from Montezuma. You'll love it, but please spend some time in the town too. And go to the waterfalls too.

Jaco is huge town. Montezuma is a village. No comparison at all.

I blogged about lots of my trips at my blog http://GarySaid.com/tags/montezuma/ you can search there for "Costa Rica" or "Jaco" too.

I even created a photo site, just for the Montezuma area of Costa Rica http://MontezumaPacific.com/

A few dozen of my videos at YouTube of Montezuma www.youtube.com/user/garylapointe/videos…

And some cool 720(?) degree 3D-ish PhotoSynths at photosynth.net/userprofilepage.aspx…

but I don't know how to restrict to just Montezuma (but I'd guess half are from Costa Rica). A dozen or two just from Montezuma.

Have fun!

Gary
