Birding - Monteverde vs. Savegre

We will be flying into San Jose and renting a car for a 10-12 day trip. Our last 5 days will be spent around Uvita and the Marino Bellena N.P. We would like to do a couple of days of serious birding. Is it worth driving all the way up to Monteverde? It seems the Savegre area has good birding and it's on our way. Any other suggestions??

From Uvita you are probably about 2 hours from Savegre and about 6-7 hours from Monteverde, so time wise it makes sense to head to Savegre. For serious birding you might want to consider 2 nights at Savegre and 1-2 nights at El Toucanet lodge in nearby Copey de Dota. Between the 2 you geta good mix of high and mid altitude birds. If you go during the Quetzal nesting season (March-May) you stand a good chance of seeing them at both places

Great answer by Jaxdiver! Savengre in San Geraldo de Dota is on your way to San Jose about 1 1/2 to 2 hours from Uvita and same to San Jose if you are after serious birding this is the area to be in, you will enjoy it!

We did this very thing last year late Jan/Feb. From San Jose we went directly to El Toucanet, a little hard to find. In the mornings after early coffee, Gary, the owner, takes you on a free birding walk along the road. Within minutes we saw two quetzals and a toucanet. After the walk Edna serves a great breakfast. After spending the day we went on to Savegre Lodge where we spent two days. There were lots of birds on the grounds and some nice hikes. We're only novice birders but love to see them, and there seemed to be plenty. Our best birding was on the Oso, not such a big drive from Uvita, were we hired a guide for a full day. His name is Nito Paniagua. He was an excellent guide and photographer through his spotting scope. It was a spectacular experience. We also happened on to a sloth crossing the road!!!!!!!!!!! We're doing a return trip in 10 days landing in Liberia and Monte Verde is our first stop.

If staying in Uvita the closest location with good birding and professional guides is Hacienda Baru. You ca do it a a half day (but starting really early) event.

Thank you all so very much for your input. These are all great ideas that we will use in planning our trip. This will be our 3rd trip to CR and still haven't visited Monteverde or Arenal. Hmmmmm, guess that means trip #4 is in our future.

From San Jose take road 27 all the way to Orotina...then take 34 to Quepos...then all the way to Dominical...Uvita...BUT you are asking for RAFIKI...to go to RAFIKI you do not have to drive all the way to Domincal or Uvita the detour to Rafiki is close to Quepos Airport...
