 Road Conditions Arenal to Monteverde

Our recent trip to Costa Rica was quite nice, interesting, and fun. Our arrangements for flights, hotel, and car all worked flawlessly.

However, we have one concern that needs to be pointed out to those contemplating driving from Arenal to Monteverde....it may be more of a challenge than the average traveller wants....!

A good bit of the road to Arenal and then on to Monteverde is fine. However, enough of the road is SO BAD that we had strong concern for our personal safety and that of the vehicle... A significant portion of the driving was treacherous....hazardous, unsafe, frightening....the road is often 1.5 lanes wide for two cars or the frequent delivery trucks. There are no guardrails. The unpaved section of road is dirt, plus full of large rocks. Potholes and numerous rocks litter the road making it very easy to damage the vehicle. Our speed was often 10 miles per hour or less, driving in low or 2nd gear...at one point two vehicles rounded a curve head on into us, we had to stop and back up so they could come around. There were many vehicles coming at us where the passing was extremely close. Another couple we encountered traveling the same route came upon a landslide that had just occurred, they had to wait for road services to come clear the road. Add to this the cloud cover (remember, you're going to a cloud forest) and your visibility is often very limited.

Sorry Luis Road Advisor, we cannot recommend this drive for the average tourist...way too much danger and chance for accident.

And, there is NO GAS STATION in the Monteverde area. It so happened that we were able to make it to the gas station after our treacherous descent, to a station near the coastline, but we had no foreknowledge that gasoline would not be available. We met a tourist who gratefully paid black market prices for bootlegged gas in Monteverde, poured from a gas can in some local resident's front yard.

Don't sweat it unless its raining. i recommend a 4X4 and be prepared for an adventure. I drove ALL these roads last week. It just seems sketchy at first because we are not used to it. My girlfriend started freaking out at first but then really got into it. You WILL get lost. It will be fun, just keep asking the locals where to go. Then ask some more. Gorgeous drive!

YES!! You will want a GPS........the time spent in stopping to ask will double your drive time in my opinion. So many times the GPS would say "turn left in 100 feet..." The road 100 feet up would not be something we would have turned on without the insistent directions from the GPS lady,...and she was always right!!

Perhaps we are blind to danger.. or just thrill seekers... but honestly we did the drive from arenal to monteverde and then on to Nicoya (Santa Theresa). Yes we had a 4wd.. we even had our kids and what a great adventure. We had read many threads on the supposed "hazzardous conditions" and i even thought for a split second not to hire a car and go on buses.. so glad we didn't.

We took it steady and actually did not think the roads were that bad until we got to Nicoya... but even then using sense and going at a steady pace we had a fantastic time. Driving ourselves... getting lost all made our trip more of an adventure and we were able to go at our own pace and discover 'off the beaten track'. Please do not be put off driving Costa Rica... just need to have your wits about you. We had never driven a 4wd before and have only ever driven on good westernised roads and had no specialist driving skills we made it... safely.

That video was good, but was not able show the road surface very well. The drop offs did not concern me nearly as much as the huge potholes & rocks in the roads at times. Felt a bit like a real life video game sometimes. I am not that young either (49) & went with my son. Too be sure, it requires full concentration & slow driving. I was not able to appreciate the scenery as much as in other places with better road conditions. But I did it in a 2WD Yaris. I would recommend a 4WD for this stretch of road, though, mostly because of the low clearance my car had. I was worried several times about damage to my undercarriage & was glad I took out full ins. on the car.

One more thing....I found the GPS to be invaluable. We drove many areas of CR & never got lost. I'm sure we would have several times without it, not on these roads, but several other places we went to.

I never once felt in danger when driving away where in CR. Monteverde is not the worst. But where ever you are, take it steady, respect the road you have, none of the roads are like motorways. As long as you drive according to the road and don't try drive like you do at home it is not dangerous, just different. Being in a hurry is not an option which suits me fine,; we were on holiday rushing has no place on my holidays. Do not be put off by scare-mongers, if you worry about these things travel somewhere more developed.

Watched the video. I agree that the drop is worthy of butterflies in the stomach.

I lived in Colorado for a while and I actually feel better after watching the video because I don't believe it can compare to driving down Berthoud Pass on a sheet of ice in white-out conditions w/ sheer drops looming. Even with guardrails it is a white-knuckle-hell-drive, and I did it repeatedly cause I wanted to ski!

Looks like you just need to take it slow and be cautious and safe. I think we'll give it a shot. Just don't tailgate me, okay??

What is the best alternative to get from arenal to monteverde besides driving yourself? Hire a driver? The lake route mentioned earlier? Flying to or from San Jose??? Thanks

In my opinion if not driving take the jeep boat jeep trip. Cheap, scenic and the drivers know the roads.

If you are on a budget you can take a bus to Tilaran and then to Santa Elena. Long trip though.

No airport here in Monteverde so that won´t work.

Roads are in much better condition than before. They are working the road between Santa Elena and Tilaran right now.

Heavy rains do damage and create some potholes.

If you drive slow and NEVER AT NIGHT you will be fine driving.
