Need help with itinerary on first day/night

Our flight gets into San Jose at 9:00pm on a Sunday. I would like to go straight to MA but is it worth it? Or is it best to stay one night in San Jose? If we are to leave that night from San Jose what would you all suggest for transportation? What if we were to leave the next morning?

Thank you!

Do stay near SJO airport, which is located near Alajuela, and start your holidays next morning, fresh, relaxed, filled with Tico style breakfast, and ejoying a sunny morning drive to MA.

Agree with xelas. It's a 3 hour drive from the airport and your only options are a private driver or a taxi. If you overnight in Alajuela you have a lot more choices: fly on Sansa or Nature Air, take a shared shuttle bus like interbus which you book in advance, rent a car or hire a private driver. The drive is scenic and there's a great short stop at the bridge over the Rio Tarcoles to see giant crocodiles.
