Renting a car from the airport and driving to Manuel Antonio

Hi folks,

Have people rented a car at the San Jose Airport and driven to Manuel Antonio? I am planning on renting a car and getting a GPS.

Thanks and any tips/suggestions would be appreciated!

Lois

With a GPS it's an easy drive on a nice paved highway...no worries! If you can get into town before dark it's always easier to see but not necessary...just go slow and enjoy the ride!

It's easy with maps and/or GPS, or ask your hotel or concierge for driving directions which will usually be even more detailed. Thousands do this all year long, so it is pretty easy if you are up to the adventure! Enjoy!

If it is going to be your first time in CR the best you can do is to get a GPS...

Which company are you renting from?

It's about a three hour drive. If you have time, stop at the Rio Tarcoles bridge to see the huge crocs down below. There's a little place to stop right by the bridge that serves smoothies and sells fresh fruit. They have restrooms you can use. Just don't leave anything in your car unattended. GPS is great; it will alert you to all the school zones, and there are tons, as well as things like cattle crossings, landslide areas, etc. Our GPS cost us about 12 bucks and was well worth it.

Great idea-...incredible nice road all the way by road 27 and 34...Tracoles crocs are nice and a most to see...most of the time Tourist Police around...you will see a couple of motorcycles with the officers...just let them know that you are leaving your luggage at the car!

We did this route just a month ago. The drive is very easy, with a few toll booths along the way. Good idea to get a GPS, it's been very helpful for us since we did some side trips. There are quite a few fruit stands along Hwy 27 before turning into 34. You can buy some cheap fruits there.

Hi -

We just got back this morning!

Easy drive both there and back. We arrived last Sunday and it was pouring rain. The highway is nice and the GPS helped alot. There are very few signs so the GPS was key for us - we debated however are very glad we did it.

Their GPS in Costa Rica is different. You use the name of the place you are going not a street address or coordinates. Ingenious if you think about it - stops people from bringing their own GPS from home.

It's 2 hours and 30 minutes without stopping.

You need a couple of dollars or colones for tolls - just three on the way. Remember 500 colones = 1 USD

Have a great time!
