Besides the actual park, are there any hiking/walking trails around Manuel Antonio that a family could do without a guide? We are not planning on renting a car, so ideally it would need to be something we could access with public transportation.

Not that I know of. Walking around outside the park you are most likely going to be walking around someones property, as in most countries this is frowned upon here without permission.
You do not need a guide to hike the trails in the park, just pay the small entrance fee and hike to your hearts content. Maybe the DE over that way can expand on the options, sit tight.
Agree ...just pay the park entrance fee and spend the day inside of the park...bring water and some snacks...

You can also check with your hotel.....several hotels in the area have their own reserves and hiking trails on the property.

Yes, Dave is right, some hotel complexes have hiking trails or can show you some areas near them. Keep in mind, it is very hilly where we are. Also, if you have a rental car, Hacienda Baru is less than 30 mins driving on exc roads towards Dominical and has excellent trails to hike with or without a guide. If you go a little further, you can also hike around Parque Ballena. Enjoy!

Yes, by public bus to Dominical, but the departures are very limited. Also, by shuttles like easyride, but it becomes quite costly or rather incovenient if you do not have a car. Enjoy!
