Closest, nicest beach to Quepos

We will be in Quepos this January as part of our trip and would like to take a taxi or a bus to spend some time at the beach. Are there nice, safe beaches nearby for 4 middle-aged women? Can you help with advice? If we take a taxi there, are there phones near the beach where we could call for the return trip?

Your best bet is take the local bus (50 cents) to the public (free) Manuel Antonio beaches, or you can pay $10 each and go inside the park (park is closed on Mondays) where the beaches are even more amazing. If you go in the park, you need to pack food and water, as there are no services within the park. If you are outside at the public beach it is perfectly safe and you can rent chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, surf boards, etc and waiters will come around and offer to get you stuff from local restaurants, etc or you can just walk to one of the many options around that beach area. Both are excellent options and only minutes on the bus or by taxi (around $6-$8 each way). There are also taxis (red) that wait around the public beach area to take you back to Quepos, or any restaurant is happy to call you one. Once you see it, you will see it is super easy! Enjoy!

That is the way...take the bus to Espadillas beach ...and spend the day there...plenty taxis if you need a ride back to Quepos or just take the bus back again!

Thanks for your help. Just a few more questions, please: How do I know which bus stop to go to and how do the buses display where they are going? Are there changing restrooms at Espadillas Beach?

In Quepos there is a very obvious central bus station right in the middle of town......you can ask anyone and they will point the way. The buses are lined up and the one you need will prominently say Manuel Antonio in the front window. You do not buy a ticket, for the local bus you just pay the driver (250 colones each). When you get to the main beaches, you will see them right on your right hand side, there are several options a few blocks apart to get off the bus. I recommend getting off in front of Marlin Restaurant, then its an easy walk to do whatever you want and get your bearings about you. There are not changing rooms, so go prepared, or you can ask to use the bathroom of local restaurants. Its easy to get the bus back, it goes by around every 30 minutes. Enjoy!

Does the bus only make certain stops? or will they stop anywhere? I'm staying at Coyaba and was wondering the same about the beaches and bus routes. I know Coyaba is on the main road.

They have a stop right in front of Gaia Hotel, which is right next door to Coyaba, so no problem. Enjoy!

I personally would opt for the beaches inside the park. Much much much nicer. But a bit more of a hassle and it does cost $10.
