Where to go for 8 days?

We are flying in and out of SJO with four adlut/teen kids (23, 20, 16 and 9). What's the best itinerary? We were told to stay in Manuel Antonio the whole time, but wonder if we should stay somewhere else for part or all of the time (Arenal? Playa Hermosa? Monteverde?)

I would stay in 2 places with Manuel Antonio being one of them. The other destination would depend on your interests.

Both Arenal and Manuel Antonio have plenty to do for one week or more, so it is hard to decide and much depends on your travel style with the kids. If you like a nice mix of beach and mountain, then definitely split the trip. If you want to relax more, then there is more flexibility in Manuel Antonio for beaches and great tours for your family. Enjoy!

I will split the vacation Arenal and Manuel Antonio...kids will love to see Arenal and enjoy some of the great soft adventure tours...and of course the Hot Springs!

Agree... Arenal and Manuel Antonio will provide the most opportunity for interesting experiences for your time. Both offer plenty of options for outdoor adventures, each with their own distinct style. Arenal has volcano hikes, jungle tours and ziplines. MA has plenty of water adventures (snorkeling, deep sea fishing, surf lessons) and the National Park. The only real problem you'll have is figuring out what adventures you're willing to sacrifice, because you won't have time for them all.

As the rest of the replies Arenal and Manuel Antonio will be great choices...lots of activities for families.
