My girlfriend and I are planning an escape to Costa Rica in January - anticipating 9 nights.

We are hoping to build in a good mix of adventure and relaxation. Right now we've planned 2/3 nights in Arenal and 2 nights in Monteverde.

My question is what to do w/ the other 4 nights: Manuel Antonio/Quepos or Tamarindo/Flamingo, etc? Our initial thought was to make it easy and choose one of the All Inclusive resorts in Guanacaste...but we are not really enamored with any of them.

So, if you have any advice as to which option would best provide us with snorkeling/surfing, ample pool/beach-side cocktails, funky beach town dining/exploring and lush surroundings...we are all ears!

(If it helps, we have not yet determined what airport we'll fly into, or how we'll get around...waiting to pin down final destinations first)
