Ease of driving from SJO to Los Suenos Marriott

Hello,

Was wondering abou the ease of driving in a rental car from SJO to Los Suenos? Was planning on getting a car, heard they have a new toll road (27) but the hotel said that it sometimes may close for maintenance.

Are the roads mountainous, or dangerous at all? Are the directions easy? We were planning ot get a GPS. Also heard the traffic near SJO is very bad, so don't want that to be an issue on the return.

Thanks

Dear onehaqq

Let me try to answer your questrions...

It is VERY easy to drive from SJO to Los Sueñas...I do it almost every day...1.5 hours the most.

Road 27 is one of our beswt roads...when the hotel saids ...sometimes may be close... I have no idea what they are saying that...since any time any of our roads may close for maintenance...maybe they have nothing else to said...

Any road in our country is mountainous...and dangerous as any road around the world...just common sense...and everything is going to be OK...

Very ewasy directions...not problem at all to get to MArriott Los Sueños from SJO...

You do not have to drive by San Jose to get to Los Sueños...do not worry about the traffic...slow downs now days for about 15 minutes leaving SJO to take the road to La Garita then to 27th...the Pan Am Hwy is under construction around SJO...not a viggie!

It is easy but there are no road sign. I would recommend taking a shuttle to Los Suenos and then renting the car in the Jaco Beach area as you need it. Taxi are inexpensive and you can get around without a car. All of the tours provide transportation. If you really need a car for your whole trip I would still rent it in the Jaco area and then drop it off at the airport. There is nothing worse that getting off a plane in another country and getting lost.

Made this drive on 12/18/12...it was easy! Roads were great & the traffic wasn't bad. It took me around 1 1/2 hours at 7:30a.m. I didn't know there would be tolls but no biggie as I just asked the toll worker the price in USD. There are 2 tolls. They are 590 colones ($2) & 440 colones ($1). Change was given in colones

Better to book a transfer van and let a local do the driving then rent a car in Jaco or Los Suenos after you arrive. We have a condo and a car in Jaco and still enjoy having a driver pick us up at the airport when we arrive so we can just relax, have a few beers on the ride, stop at the crocodile bridge to see the crocs, and not have to deal with driving.

The drive from the airport to Los Suenos is really easy IF you know the way and have done it before. Getting to the Autopisto from the airport without knowing the way or having really good directions is a bit tricky. Once on the Autoppisto, the rest of the drive is easy.

Don't forget to stop on the bridge over the Torcoles river to look at the crocks.

This is a basic drive, on a nice roads, toll or not, and easy to manage. Thousands of tourist rent cars and make this drive monthly to the coast.
