re: Recommendations for stay in Tortuguero?

Suggestions for place to stay where they arrange transportation from San Jose and have a tour where you actually could see the turtles in late July?

We love Tortuga Lodge; it's a little pricier than some of the other lodges, but they let you do meals and tours on your own vs. being put into a set group so it was worth the cost for us. Excellent food and service too. July is a good time to see turtles.

Thank you for your reply. Would you recommend going there first from our flight into San Jose Airport? We're also planning on seeing Arenal Volcano and San Manuel Antonio National Park. Would you also recommend seeing Monteverde?

The transfers to Toturguero are normally ear ly in the morning therefore you might need to spe nd 1 night in San Jose if you Tortuguero first then it would be Arenal, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio. From Arenal to Montverde there is a Land boat tfr not expensive that crosses the lake and saves you t ime on the road.

I'd recommend deciding where you want to stay and then e-mailing with them about your transportation options. Most of them will arrange transportation for you, and a lot of people spend that first night in SJO and then get picked up early the next morning. We went to Tortuguero from Arenal, but that's atypical, and we had to pay for private transportation vs. sharing with others. We were driven to a certain point and then picked up by boat to go the rest of the way. When we left, we flew out on Sansa just to save time. It was nice to see the area from the boat and from the air, two totally different perspectives.

We are basically doing the same trip that you did--July 2013--Where did you stay in Tortuguero. We are looking at either the Tortuga Lodge or Mawamba. Any suggestions for Tortuguero or the rest of the trip. Thanks so much

You can easily arrange a shared van shuttle and boat from Arenal to Tortuguero. It's not really "atypical" at all.

I think you would be happy with either Tortuga Lodge of Mawamba Lodge. The most popular lodging in Tortuguero is Casa Marbella which is booked months ahead of time.

We stayed at Laguna Lodge and would highly recommend it – review to follow but it was fantastic. What differentiates this lodge from most of the others is its location on the island such that you have access to the canal, the beach and the town of Tortuguero on foot. Almost all of the others except Mawamba Lodge and the B & B’s in the town proper require that you get a boat ride to the beach or the town. The properties in town are very basic and the town itself is worth seeing for a few hours walking around but that’s about it. There are others lodges like Manatus that are more upscale, but you don’t go to Tortuguero for air conditioning, flat screen TV’s and telephones, and if you do, you will pay dearly for it.

This website give a good overview of most of your options, but book direct with whatever one you choose http://www.tortugueroinfo.com/
