 Single Woman in Puerto Viejo

I am in the midst of planning a trip to Puerto Viejo for the week of Thanksgiving. The person that was going with me cannot go. I still want to go. Is it a safe place for a single woman to be? Also, can anyone recommend a hotel-the closer to beach the better.

Puerto Viejo is as safe as any other place in Costa Rica, use common sense and you will be fine. Try to go to beaches that are popular with visitors such as Cocles and Punta Uva, and also take taxis when going out after dark.

My favorite places to stay are Banana Azul in Playa Negra area, just North of town and on the beach, Costa de Papito in Cocles Beach area, across road from beach, and Korrigan Lodge in Punta Uva area, beautiful jungle setting, 5 minute walk to one of the best beach in Costa Rica.

It is safe as long as you keep a low profile and common sense...I always tell the same to SOLO travellers...if you meet somebody..men or women...just said that your brother/husband/boyfriend/friend is at the hotel and is in his/her way to meet you...most guys do not like to hear that...

Nice safe place...BANANA AZUL ...nice people there!

Just buckle up and enjoy the ride in PARADISE!

Hi,

I've traveled Costa Rica alone lots and lots of times. Even alone with my son when my husband couldn't accompany me. Some of those times were to the Caribbean.

I wouldn't go out alone on a dark street, however, it's lively and safe. Also, you would probably have more fun in a popular hotel.

I don't know your budget, but a huge backpacker haven is Rockin' Jays. You'll meet tons of people it's close to the center and fun!

Hope this helps,

You've already received some great and true advice. traveling alone doesn't have to be stressful or boring... and that usually means getting to know other people... but be careful and use common sense... don't let yourself be drawn to something you don't want to...that doesnt mean you cant talk to anybody, no no no... just be extra careful as traveling alone really draws the attention of the locals... :)

Costa Ricans are very friendly people, and they will start talking to you, and sometimes they will even get very "friendly"... I know my men here :)... LOL.... so just use common sense and you'll be fine

Depending on the kind of hotel you're looking for Playa Negra Guesthouse, Pachamama would be worth checking out... and if you want to go further south and experience a different kind of lodging just by a beautiful golden beach, Almonds & Corals.

Gracias

I've also traveled to Puerto Viejo alone (actually with a young daughter) and never felt in danger. I see people at home I try to avoid, same with anyplace else. I don't walk at dark unless with a large group of people, otherwise taxi home. Banana Azul is a perfect beachfront location for solo travel and mingling. It's a beautiful lodge.

Yes you will be fine, but I agree with everyone about taxi at night.

If you give us a budget for a hotel you can get some good suggestions. I visited 7 different hotels a few weeks ago in PV and got a good feel for all of them. One of them was Rockin Js. If you need to go cheap, and can deal with filth then this is a really good choice. I could not handle staying at Rockin Js. Too grundgy for me, but it is a fun place to hang. I am much more Cariblue style to stay, but Rockin J's to hang out :)
