We are (maybe were) planning a trip to Puerto Viejo next February with a group of friends. We've traveled to several Caribbean islands and thought we'd give the Caribbean side of Costa Rica a try.
However, after reading the latest two reviews (see below) regarding the condition of the beach in Puerto Viejo, now we are not so sure and may reconsider where we go in February.

Overview. It is a funky beach town, and I can see why some like it, but I can also see why some don't. No question, in comparison to the other beaches we had been at, including Manuel Antonio and Samara, it was dirty. There were piles of garbage all over the place and thus a lingering trash smell. While we could not partake, it is likely as others say, good nightlife. A second problem for us was the beaches. Quite different to Samara, which is very wide and flat, and relatively calm, Puerto Viejo was much rougher (as advertised) and a steep beach.
Anyway, summary is, it ain't such a bad place, but it did not work for us with our kids, and I definitely agree with the previous review - it was dirty.

don't know where the other reviewers were on there trip, but the beach I saw in Puerto Viejo was absolutely the dirtiest beach and most disgusting beach that I have ever been to and I have traveled to ALOT of beach towns.
The next morning, we hoped that things would look better in the daylight, but our walk on the beach was extremely disappointing. The beach was covered in trash and broken, there were packs of stray dogs all along the beach getting into "turf wars", and groups of buzzards picked at dead rotten fish that lined the beach. The only properties along this beach were shanti's and trailors. The beaches on the caribbean side are also not your typical white sand beaches with blue water, however, if they were cleaned up they could be nice beaches.
