Well, there is only so much you can do with a 1-year old. We raised our child in Samara and would take the baby to the beach every evening. Simply sitting in the sand while playing seemed to be a great thrill....

Obviously, anything that requires a lot of physical activity will be rather difficult. That said, you can certainly hike to a few lovely spots around Samara, visit the little animal rescue station in Carrillo, or just do some sight-seeing in the area.

On occasion, there might also be an organized kid's event (such a a clown or dance performance) in the public Sala - but as a tourist, it can be difficult to find out about such events.

In terms of other advice, you should definitely look for some insect repellant you feel comfortable putting on your son. There are some products locally available that we thought were excellent. Some of them can be found in Samara or Nicoya, others were only to be found in San Jose (such a repellant by Pigeon, a Japanese company).

If there is a particular product that you already like, just bring it with you.

Thank you! The animal rescue sounds fantastic and we definitely would like to do a few hiking excursions. Any thoughts on what is close by? Was also wondering what dining places are particularly child friendly and possibly have high chairs.

Thanks again!

Ah, there is plenty of hiking to be had. You can simply hike up the road toward Santo Domingo for some spectacular views. You can hike Punta Indio to a little waterfall and hidden beach. You can hike the hills between Samara and Buena Vista that also sport a little beach. All are easily accessible - although there are no signs. In other words, you will have to ask locally.

Just about all restaurants are VERY child friendly - as is all of Costa Rica. I don't think you will have any issues whatsoever and you certainly need not worry about it for even a second.

That said, do not expect that they have play areas. Some may or may not have high chairs. Since we were also concerned, we simply always brought a foldable "table chair" with us. This one, in fact:

It was easy to pack and bring anywhere and we NEVER had to worry about finding an appropriate spot for our baby...

Check out Sol y Mar Cabinas and Restaurant. The new owners have 4 children and often offer children's movie nights or other children activities.

Have fun!

Hi, This question is for Framptonian and Brendad (and anyone else in Samara with kids!)

We've been spending recent winters in Montezuma with our daughters (6 & 8), and are wondering what it would be like to spend the winter in Samara.

One of the things we like about Montezuma is that there are many kids activities (we homeschool, so we look for lots & lots of activities for our daughters - here in Montezuma they're doing tela, horseback riding, dance, violin... and of course, playing in the town park with kids and lots of playdates).

We'll be in Samara from April 22 to 28 to get a feel for the place before making our way to Liberia airport and back home to Quebec (boohoo).

Can you tell me about group activities? I understand there's a private school too?

Also, there are no bugs here now in Montezuma. Will we see any in Samara? We just got back from Bocas del Toro and were eaten alive!

Thanks for all your help!

Simtam, maybe we'll bump into each other while we're there?

Hi Rhonda,

Samara is a great family location and there are lots of activities and tours that can be done by children. Here are some examples:

- Horse tours

- Canopy Tours

- Kayaking and Snorkeling Tours to the Island

- Stand Up Paddling Tours

- Zumba classes

There are 2 schools that you can contact to see if there are any activities being planned at the moment.

Samara Pacific School www.facebook.com/SamaraPacificSchool?fref=ts

Mareas International Homeschool http://www.facebook.com/angelina.phillips.589

You can also contact CREAR which is an after school program for local schools but that may offer activities in which other children can participate in.

As for bugs, repellent is usually enough to keep them away.

Have fun!!!

In addition to Brenda's comment:

You might find plenty of kids on the beach every evening where many play together. That's where we usually go.

In terms of group activities, we've been to anything from Clowns to dances in the public hall off the soccer field. As a temporary resident, it can be difficult to find out about such events since there aren't necessarily fliers to be found. Information on some of these activities is really just spread by word of mouth.

10. Re: Coming to Playa Samara mid April w/ our 1 year. Activities?

Hi Rhonda,

I'm living here with 3 kids, ages 10, 9 and 5. It has been about 7 years since we were in Montezuma so its hard for me to compare Samara to Montezuma. Our kids are in school full time so they get lots of interaction with other kids there and have made friends there that they see on the beach, around town, or who stop by our house.

For extra curriculars, there is horseback riding, yoga, guitar lessons, etc, but these are not "kid classes" per se, so you just never no. There isn't really a "hang-out" area for local kids like a central park. There is the soccer field, but it mostly goes unused.

There are kids here, and its a fun place to be with kids, but it will probably take some asking around to find non-tourist kids to play with. The schools and CREAR would be a great place to start.
