I've been trying to find the Monkey trail on a map(saw it once but can't find it again). Where is it in relation to Playa Hermosa and where can I find a map with it on it?

look at www.terrazasdelsol.net/vacation_faq.htm which has the monkey trail highlighted.
When you are coming from Playa Hermosa...take the road towards Sardinal...about 200 meters (before you get to..) from the Sardinal gas station is a dusty road...that is the World famous MONKEY TRAIL!!

What is the Monkey Trail?
The Monkey Trail..is an old "short cut" Between Sardinal and Potrero ...use to be a trail to get cattle from the ranches in that part of the country...during the dry months is OK...but during the wet months is really bad...but in the last few years...has been repair...in the last few years...has been a big help for us drivers..to avoid the infamous road to Tamarindo and Flamingo...also is the road to get to some great beaches like Guacamaya...Costa Esmeralda...and to get to El bajo de los Tiburones ...even that those beaches are inside of a big private ranch!

roadadvisor, is fathers day celebrated in Costa Rica or is it a US thing, just curious?
I went to CR in April while it was still very dry. Our driver from Liberia took the Monkey Trail on our way into potrero. We were basically 4x4ing it the entire way. It is an EXTREMELY bumpy dirt road. I believe we also crossed a river bed and while it was dry I cant imagine that during green season it would be so. We arrived safely ofcourse but I would not recommend taking this route if you dont know where you are going. There are no lights or street signs. I love CR though and will return very soon. If you have the chance try not to miss out on arenal volcano or tabacone, which is the garden of eden in my book.....PURA VIDA!
