Family travel to Arenal - hotel ideas and transportation.

My husband and I are taking my mom (75yo) and our 3 boys (5-10yr) to Arenal for 3 days at the start of our CR trip. We were looking at the Lost Iguana, Campo Silencio or Leaves & Lizards. Also, we heard hiring a driver to/from airport is a good idea. But then do we rent a car locally or just use tours(?) or taxis(?) for the 6 of us? Finally, we love wildlife but can't be too arduous with active but elderly mom and young kids. Any favorite activities to do in area? Thanks!

Hi Fosdy...

Lost Iguana is a great place...very nice location...about 30 minutes from La Fortuna...close to Hanging bridges...and Sky Treck...

Silencio del Campo is only 7 minutes from La Fortuna...great location and of course close to La Fortuna restaurants...

Hiring a private driver in your case is a good idea...and once in La Fortuna rent a car...you can save money and time...and with your mom and kids...nice to have a vehicle to drive around and shop for food...etc...easy to drive in and around La Fortuna...check with ALAMO rent a car ....

Of course a family thing to do...Hot Springs...check Eco Termales...for me the best time around 5:30Pm until closing and buy the combo that includes dinner...the chicken dinner is great...

For local food...Soda La Parada...and one of the best palces to eat...Don Rufino´s ...

La Fortuna is a very safe place...of course common sense!

Lost Iguana is a great place located near the lake. It is 20 minutes out of town, surrounded by jungle and has a great view to the volcano.

Silencio del Campo is closer to town. They have nice bungalows and hot spring fed pool. They also have a nice volcano view.

Leaves and Lizards is more like a small ranch. They are located about 30 minutes out of town on a bumpy dirt road. Your kids would likely be bored.

Plenty of slower paced things to do in this area such as Cano Negro boat tour, Safari Float on the Penas Blancas, Hanging Bridges, La Fortuna Waterfall, hikes at the base of the volcano and of course the hot springs.

We've stayed at the Lost Iguana several times. We really like it. it's in a very jungly atmosphere away from town. The walk to some of the rooms can be a little steep, but they have golf carts and will drive you if your mom has trouble making it. Silencio del Campo always gets great reviews as well. Cano Negro and the Penas Blancas float are nice for spotting wildlife. The Proyecto Asis animal rescue center is also great if you want to get up close. We were able to feed some wildlife there.

Leaves and Lizards is neat, but nowhere near anything. Lost Iguana is a great choice because you can get a larger room and spread out some. I really like the springs complex at The Springs, because you have two different areas, one with a waterslide and jungle feel and the other with more a resort pool type feel - so not a ton of walking , entrance is reasonable compared to Tabacon, and its more family atmosphere than Baldi. Sky Tram/SkyTrek would be fun if you're looking for a zip line because they have the gondolas and hanging bridges for those that don't want a zip line.

Ditto on the safari floats for families
