China History or art? Which one are you interested in? If you want to know some thing about China history, choose Shanghai History museum. If you are interested in art, Choose Shanghai art museum. Or choose two, if you have enough time.

It depends on your own interest. The art history museum is mostly about the modern Chinese art exhibits while the hisotry musuem is more about the city development in its cultural relics display.

FIY,Shanghai Musuem seems to be a more popular museum option with its impressive relic collections.

History Museum is better. You can learn the local culture of ancient Shanghai there. Some short movies there are also excellent.

There is no Shanghai Art Museum at Peoples Square as it moved to the former China Pavilion at the site of the Expo 2010 in Pudong.

The Shanghai Museum is at the southern edge of Peoples Square, filled with artifacts from over 3,000 years of Chinese history. Most of these pieces could be termed art in the most liberal sense. Included are many scrolls, ceramics, bronze, jade and gold jewelry, etc. This museum is free and considered very English friendly. It has one of the best collections on display in the country.

The City of Shanghai Municipal Museum at the Oriental Pearl Tower ground floor traces the history of the city only. I found it very interesting, but mostly contemporary as Shanghai's growth emerged after foreigners became colonialists in the 1800s. Admission is 35 yuan.

The Shanghai Art Museum is what you would term a classical art museum, featuring fine art. I like the architecture of the China Pavilion, worth the visit just for circling it and observing. It is simplistically modern and yet quintessentially Chinese.
