I am a Scuba Instructor with over 3500 dives, many of them in Fiji. I tell you that just to lend some credence to my opinion. Beqa has some excellent dives that aren’t the shark dive. I’d recommend either Aqua Trek Beqa or Beqa Adventure Divers for your diving. Both do offer the shark dive, but generally on alternate days. On the other days they both do soft coral dives, and both companies are good. I’d start out doing a couple days of soft coral dives, where you will see tons of hard and soft coral as well as a myriad of other reef life, and quite possibly some pelagic activity like sharks, too. I think that after you have had some bottom time you may also want to check out the shark dive. Personally, I don’t approve of shark feeding dives (or anything that artificially changes the environment), but I have done that dive several times with both dive operators. They are very safety conscious, and if you request that they watch you closely or give special assistance I’m sure that they would. In reality there is little difference between 60 and 80 feet, and you probably wouldn’t even notice. It is a pretty structured dive anyway, so I wouldn’t worry about the extra depth. And even though I dislike the feeding portion, it is a very interesting dive, at least one time. Even if you choose not to do it, there are many other beautiful dives in Beqa. I personally prefer the east side of the lagoon, but that is a farther boat ride from Pac Harbour so most of the sites those operations use are on the west side. If you get a chance, 3 Virgins, Lion’s Den or Soft Coral Plateau are all great!
