Darjeeling is a tourist friendly place - I do not forsee anything out of world if you are travelling on your own. There are enough websites that can do airline and hotel bookings for you.

Mid-June is off season in Darjeeling due to the rains. Darjeeling might even be cut off by road from the plains. You might want to consider this in case you haven't done so already.

Personally, travelling on my own wins hands down. It gives you the flexibility to tour at your own pace and on your own itenerary than be herded around as per the package tour. Its so much more exciting and fun. You will save a package on travel, if you use shared jeeps for tours (instead of the overpriced private taxis), book your air tickets in advance by picking the right bargain. Hotel rates could also be cheaper depending on the season, and you have more choice. And for local city tours you can negotiate directly with the taxi drivers further reducing costs.

Also darjeeling areas are tourist-friendly, theres no pestering and the tendency to rip-off tourists at every opportunity is not there.

But for some others who dont have time/inclination to plan themselves and want everything spoon-fed, the package tour may be a better option.
