Sabu, the owner, from Day 1 was extremely efficient and helpful throughout the organisational process of our tour - He in India, us in Portugal -. He was knowledgeable and fast in responding to any queries, especially about the itinerary. If we wanted to change things, it was never a problem and he kept in touch until the booking was finalised. After that, we arrived at Delhi airport to be met by our driver for the two weeks, Kana. Unfortunately, no reservation had been made for us at the first hotel we should have stayed at but this was quickly rectified whilst we enjoyed the pleasures of a breakfast free of charge at The Colonel’s Retreat, Delhi centre. It was a pity because we would have liked to have stayed there – it seemed a great hotel with friendly staff and a wonderful rooftop setting for meals, especially with the numerous green parrots flying from tree to tree. After the first day our holiday went smoothly, thanks mainly to our driver, Kana, who was extremely knowledgeable about the routes and shortcuts through the cities to our various hotels and sites en route, and was friendly and helpful to all our needs including a regular supply of cold water and beers on occasions. There were a couple of disappointments on our tour. Obviously, the first hotel which didn’t happen but Sabu made amends rapidly by putting us into a five star hotel instead at no extra cost to us, but there was a festival taking place in Jaipur for the week we were there and that meant there were no elephant rides up to the Amber Fort. Not a problem but communication in these things resolves a lot of misunderstandings later on – we should have been advised (obviously there was nothing he could do about the timing but we were expecting an elephant ride and the dates of the festival must have been known well in advance as it’s an annual event).
The other hic-up, for us, stressed out tourists. On our last day we flew back into Delhi before our flight back to Europe, only to find no driver to meet us at the airport. After a lot of stress, hassle and phone calls, we finally ended up taking a taxi to the hotel, paid for by Icon India Tours, and the return journey for our early morning flight also by taxi, paid for once again by Icon India Tours, as per the original itinerary. Our problem started when the hotel received the wrong flight times and numbers from Sabu which meant there was no driver to meet us, it’s just a small thing to an organisation, but an eye for small detail is as important as the big picture.
Having said that, we have had a wonderful taste of the Golden Triangle of India, sadly very much “condensed” because of our time constraints, but for all that a wonderful experience and one we are pleased to have partaken in and we can recommend using Sabu for an India tour .
