The best website to refer to is www.seat61.com/India.htm

Get your registration done at irctc.co.in, ask them to email you the registration code/password. Then you can book your tickets at www.cleartrip.com

I am currently working through this also. Once you have registered with IRCTC foreigners can only use an Amex card to buy tickets. If you don't have one then you need to open a Cleartrip account and 'synchronise' with IRCTC account so you can use/Visa/MC.

The 'Indiamike' website discusses this process also.

A possible option might be to open an account for a prepaid India Travel Card?

www.icicibank.co.uk/personal/travel_card.html

You can then book online.

Hi Francisco,

Can I ask - why do you want to travel by train in India?

Its a vast country and flights are cheap! and att the same time the trains are crammed, smelly and horrible!!

Trust me mate-- fly -- as from my experience the cost of a 1st class train tickets ain't much lower than a flight ticket.

Adrain!
