Go King Travel - scam artist: mopeds/motorbikes

Do not rent from Go King Travel, Sairee crossroads, Koh Tao. Extremely unpleasant man. Charges 4500 baht for any tiny, hidden scratch on bike. If you argue expect intimidation and threatening language. Locals say he's known to pull a knife on tourists that argue with him. Holds passport until you pay what he wants - no negotiation :(

Second complaint about Koh Tao mopeds today, but different company. Are there actually any companies on Koh Tao left that are reputable?

Hi, it's a shame you didn't get info before you hired from them as there have been other complaints about them here in the past but thanks for the warning as it will be a heads up for others planning on renting a bike in Koh Tao.

Yep! STAY AWAY!!! Rented 2 bikes for a month wanted to visit the island at our own pace, plus I was keen on a bit of off roading. Was very aware of the reputations of the bike rental company after a few weeks but by then it was too late. I returned the bikes only for the c**t to find a mark he had noted on the wrong side of the bike.

A friend who lives on the island recommends RPM in Mae Haad as being friendly and trustworthy, and the lovely people at the Banyans Bar do rental and are keener on killing your liver than taken money from you.

The only advice if you are in the same situation, PAY THEM. Don't argue, or call them liar as this is the biggest insult for Thais. There are reports of arguments escalating to knives/machetes being pulled and the odd stabbing by Go King. Call the police if that makes you feel better but don't expect that to make a blind bit of difference.

Yes - wish we'd checked online before hiring. We had no idea that Koh Tao was renowned for such scams and chose the Go King purely because it had mopeds and motorbikes at a decent monthly rental price. After renting from them we started to hear the horror stories. Oh well a lesson learnt!

Apparently better to hire from smaller companies and as far away from Sairee crossroads and Mae Head Pier as possible. The big companies are all making their money from this scam.
