Is there any place to add on to a trip to Otavalo? How about Ibarra? Or is Otavalo the only interesting place to see north of Quito?
There's Cotacachi, about 20 minutes away. It's known for its fine leather shops, and there's a nice plaza in front of the main cathedral. I think I once stumbled on their market, as well, which was more traditional with produce and livestock. Peguche is a weaving village where you can visit workshops. Outside Otavalo are several lakes around which you can hike; the Cuicocha crater lake is a bit farther on. So many people make Otavalo a day trip, but the area is well worth spending at least a couple nights in.
Thanks for your quick and detailed reply! :)
