bus to Dali

We'll be in Lijiang for a week and then heading to Yangshuo. I'm considering various alternatives for getting there. We will definitely fly from Kunming to Guilin, but I'm wondering about getting to Kunming.

Is the bus drive from Lijiang to Dali scenic & nice? (4 hours?)

Cost?

How much further is it to get to Kunming from Dali?

Cost?

We are a family of 3 and those flights add up.

Thanks,

Hi Nancy,

Yes flights do add up!

It is much quicker to go to Dali by train rather than the bus. The train service takes 2 hours (will be 90 minutes when the new fast line is up & running) Train RMB 44.

I put in the time table here: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g303781-i4882-k352…

Bus Dali to Kunming is 4 to 5 hours.

Bus Lijiang to Kunming is 9 hours on the day time bus & 10 hours on the sleeper bus.

If you want to do the train:

Dali to Kunming is an inconvenient time - depart 00.28. Arrive Kunming 7.22am RMB 162 Soft sleeper

Lijiang to Kunming - depart 9.55pm & arrive Kunming 7.22am RMB 215 soft sleeper.

The advantage of the bus over the train when travelling to Dali, is that you can catch the bus from the Old Town, while the train goes from the new Town. Buses are also convenient for Lijiang old Town. In Kunming, the train station is more in the centre than the bus stations.

In January this year, Lijiang to Dali Old Town was 3 1/2 hours by bus (66 Rmb). Dali Old Town to Kunming West Bus Station was 5 hours and 90 Rmb.

Very helpful info - thanks.

It looks like the train from Lijiang to Kunming is convenient in terms of the departure and arrival times. Does anyone know, do we need to change trains somewhere in the middle of the night? Or is it straight through?

215RMB for the train is much cheaper than even the discounted flights (660rmb).

Now about getting to the train station from the old town - how much would that be in a cab? How much time do we need to allow? We're staying at Panba.

Thanks again.

The new Lijiang East Rail station is about 5 km from Old Lijiang town. I think the Panba is on the outskirts of the old town?

From the Old Town you can either get bus Number 13 which will take to the station RMB1

Or a taxi is 20 minutes. About RMB 15 -20

If you are no used to Chinese railways get to the station 30 - 45 minutes before departure.

You will go thru security. There will be a sign board up displaying your train number. It will show you which waiting area to go to. You wait there until your train is called for boarding.

The station is only tiny so it will be easy for you.

The train from Lijiang to Kunming is K9605 / K9608. You don't need to change trains. Kunming is the last stop. The sleeper trains are comfy - the only problem with the K is that there are shared toilets. It is a good and interesting experience to try out China trains.

There is also another train 5651/5654 that does Lijiang to Kunming - don't get this train as it is slower with more stops and not modern. It's okay for Lijiang to Dali but not a long distance journey.

As for going from Kunming from Dali, you can take an express bus if you are pressed for time (a very luxury bus called Kassbohrer) from Dali to Kunming. It costs around 150 RMB per person, which is much cheaper than booking a car.

That is useful information, just in case we do get pressed for time. Which station would we get that luxury express bus from?

There is a collection of time-tables for busses and trains on http://www.yunnanexplorer.com/transport/

It shows zillions of bus-stations and allows you to click through to a photo of a time-table from the relevant station.

http://www.yunnanexplorer.com/transport/dali/ gives you a regional map with stations in the Dali area.
