I noticed in another post a comment that there is no tipping in China.

Does this apply to everything including restaurants and taxis?

Grateful for advice as I wouldn't want to appear rude.

Tipping is not expected, except for porters at the higher class hotels (although if you don't tip it's not a problem). For taxis I tend to hand over 15rmb for an 11rmb ride. Not expected but not offensive either. I have never tipped at a restaurant.

Yes, that's right. No need to tip.

As tipping is not expected, it will not bring better service if you do (which is the whole point of tipping).

Tipping is definitely not needed in China. Its not expected anyway so u r not obliged to do so.For tour guides if any tipping is needed the company will in form u as to the amount normally if not its also not compulsory. Its such a god practice nowadays that tipping is not encourage it makes everything much easier n the hotel waiters ,workers all work the same regardless of whether u tip them or not .so dont expect better treatment if u tip ok.

I don't think so. Actually people get tip who will be more happy. Of course, it is not rule that you should do or should not do.

My suggestion is that you did per you like or not.

The norm still stands that tipping is not a must n not a compulsory thing to do.Of course it is up to individual as whether u want to tip or not but when it becomes a habit when the person expects a tip in return for a small thing done it is difficult to address the quality of service rendered by the staff in anticipation of a tip .The services given to some may not be good when they feel there is no chance of a tip.Human performance n greed is a difficult situation to contain unless they r trained well regardless of whether a tip is given or not the treatment must be uniform.I head a company with over 2000 workers n human resources in regards to this its so important that all the employees r not allowed to accept anything in returns for services given to avoid any corruption later on.Cheers!!!

Definitely a NO, espically for taxi, you can report the taxi driver accept tip. Shanghai and any big asia city HK, TOKYO, does not requre tip at all.
