We're planning/thinking of going to Salar de Uyuni from San Pedro de Atacama on 25/26 feb (not much flexibility) and have to come back to San Pedro on Feb 29 latest. Been researching about tour companies for a while since so many of them have bad reputation, especially those based in San Pedro -- people say it's best to do a tour from Tupiza or Uyuni, but we don't have that option. Basically, any company I find that people say it's OK, simple googling leads us to bad reviews as well... is there any that is safe from San Pedro or should we just forget about it and do it another time from inside Bolivia??
Therefore, I've been also considering doing it just the way we do it anywhere else in the world -- go with a rented car on our own. The question here however, is -- can you take a car rented in Calama to Uyuni?? I know there are no road signs etc., but given the amount of tourists that go there every day in these escorted tours, it's not really a deserted place. Anyone has any experiences to share? I'd be really grateful.
Or is anyone maybe interested in joining a private tour? (they're more expensive but if you split it on 4 people, it might work out OK). ;-)
