Yes, renting an apartment can make for a more pleasant stay. On the other hand, you will have to pay for daily maid service, security is a bit more limited than at a hotel, and you have to have faith in the rental company.
We rented two apartments last year and had mixed reactions.
This is a budget driven decision. As Sept is not the high season hotel prices will be lower than the summer months. The same will be true for pvt apts. A good hotel like the Sol Ipanema may run US$150 per day whereas a good apt apt may be had for a lot less - about half. Do you want to prepare meals in or eat out all the time? Do you want the conveniences that come with a hotel or can you find your own way around ? If you opt for an apt , my former landlady has several for rent in Ipanema or search this site for the services offered by established R E agencies. I suggest you bargain as RE agents for non-owned apts build in hefty commissions.
