Visiting Teresopolis & Nova Friburgo after the floods

We're planning a 3 day excursion by car from Rio in August to visit Petropolis and the surrounding area. We have a few questions we hoped the experts could answer.

1. Since the floods of 2012, are there still areas heavily damaged areas to be avoided? Should we visit Teresopolis or Nova Friburgo?

2. Is it better to stay in a hotel or pousada in or near Petropolis, and visit Teresopolis and Nova Friburgo during the day? Or should we stay for part of the time in Petropolis and part of the time in Teresopolis or Nova Friburgo.

3. Other than TA, is there a good English language travel website for Petropolis and the surrounding area?

Muito obrigado !

Wow - no responses! I checked the Petropolis forum and didn't find any recent information. Can anyone help with questions #1 & 2 or refer us to other sources of info? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Petrópolis is pretty much back to where it was before the flood. You can easily do it as a day trip from Rio.

Petrópolis used to be the summer residence of the Brazilian emperors and aristocrats in the 19th century and was the official capital of the State of Rio de Janeiro between 1894 and 1903. The town was named after Emperor Pedro I, the nation's first monarch.

If you go to Nova Friburgo, you can visit one of Brazil's best kept tourist secrets, the town of Santa Maria Madalena which is supposed to have the best climate in Brazil. I've never actually been there, but I have heard good things about the Verbicaro pousada. (Not sure if I'm allowed to mention sites here, but just google "Pousada Verbicaro" and you'll find it easily)

Those who are literature buffs can go to the FLIM 2013, from 23 to 25 August (Literary Festivity of Santa Maria Madalena).

Thanks guys for the advice! We'll "green light" the excursion and try to visit Santa Maria Madalena as well.
