Hello,

I am planning a trip using frequent flier miles to Brazil. My free miles can get us to Rio but I must purchase tickets to Iguassu. The best price I can see from Rio is around $650 and the connection is not good. Is this a typical price?

Does anyone know of a direct flight to Iguassu for a reasonable price? I think I could probably change my original entry point if I can find a good city to fly to IGU from. I am flying from the US.

Thanks for your help!

Diane

Using 14 May as a default date, GOL (www.voegol.com)is offering on their website, as their cheapest choice, R$149 one way direct from Sao Paulo.

I was also looking into tickets to Iguazu from Rio last week but it was way expensive, one way though, so i tried flying out from Sao Paulo. I found a couple good deals on Oceanair and Gol, one way though. I booked my ticket on Gol for May 14th, Oceanair had a better deal but it didn't let me use my credit card from Peru, it just lets you use credit cards issued in Mexico or Brazil, which is really stupid.

Try Gol!

Unfortunately, it is probably going to be expensive. We live in Brazil right now and usually arrive in Sao Paulo, then have to purchase tickets through Brazilian airlines to get to where we are living.

We've taken the trip many times, just returned last week in fact.

We typically pay 225 USD to 300 USD for a one way ticket from Sao Paulo to Maringa. Maringa is in the same state as Foz, but with Foz being a tourist destination maybe the prices would be cheaper. In addition, the schedules are always bad. You can plan on delayed flights. It is much worse than in the US.

We typically use GOL or TAM airlines. Both can be found by googling. Occasionally you can find a cheap rate on GOL through their web-site but it is random. You just have to keep checking. We often use the travel agency through my husbands company and they can get more schedules and cheaper prices. I'm not sure if this is true for a US agency.

Unfortunately this is the way it is here. Very expensive to travel via plane. Feel free to PM me if you have some questions. Given the fact that I've made the trip from the US to within Brazil many times, I might be able to help.

Oh, one other problem you might have. Gol will not accept credit cards from outside the country, however TAM will. It has something to do with Brazilian restrictions. We have to use my husbands company when booking gol, but can put TAM on our US credit card.

FYI---from:voegol.com.br/INT/…InfoPagamento.asp

"Credit Cards

Credit cards such as American Express, MasterCard, UATP and Visa are accepted for full payment purchases– installments are not allowed."

Since about last year at this time, GOL has been set up to accept non-Brazilian-issued Visa and Master Card credit cards online--and indeed I have successfully purchased a number of tickets this way.

(Previous to that, using the Argentina site was successful.)

They do not accept US Visa regardless of what their site says. We just tried to use it two weeks ago.

If you are Brazilian and your credit card is registered in Brazil then I'm sure you had no problem.

It is the US credit cards they won't take. However, we only used our Visa so this may not be true for AE or MasterCard.

In addition their site usually asks for a CPF number during the online transaction. We have that being temporary residents, but a visitor from outside Brazil would not.

I have successfully purchased tickets on GOL (www.voegol.com.br) using a US issued Visa card many times. You should select the site for "other countries" in the upper right. Before the site was set up, last year about this time, to accept non-Brazilian issued credit cards, many people used the Argentins site as a get-around, but htis is no longer neccessary. Of course, if you are on the Brazilian site, it will indeed ask for a CPF number.

Hello,

Thanks to all who responded. We changed our incoming flight to Sao Paolo and then purchased a one way ticket on GOL airlines into IGU. Neither my Discover or Mastercard was accepted either online or by phone by GOl Airlines. I had to borrow my father's American Express to pay for my ticket. They did say, however, that they would save my reservation and I could pay for it once we got to Sao Paolo but I did not feel comfortable without a reservation already paid for ahead of time. We were also able to book a flight from IGU to Rio from TAM airlines without any problems.

Our one way ticket through TAM from IGU to Rio is $317.00US/per person.

The TAM flights either through Sao Paolo or Rio to IGU all included stops along the way. TAM had to be purchased through a Brazilian travel agent. As a US citizen, I could not buy my ticket online (even by using the "Other Countries" tab). There is no listing for the US on the Other Countries tab.

Our GOL one way direct tickets from Sao Paolo to IGU are about $100.00US per person.

Hope these notes help someone else save alot of time in making future reservations!

Diane,

Thanks for your update. It was very helpful to me. We struggle with paying for tickets here as well. I'm glad to see it worked out for you. I hope you enjoy/enjoyed your trip!

We need to travel from Rio- Iguazu - Buenos Aires mid June. Today I purchased a one way on LAN for the IGU-BA leg and it was only $214 and then I called TAM and they want $379 for the Rio-IGU leg. That is so expensive!! I checked on Kayak and it appears there are no other carriers serving that route. Does anybody have other suggestions? I checked GOL after reading the posts here, but it doesn't fly Rio - IGU. Thanks!
